"Im surprised you are not trying to capture the avatar right now, Zuko." Iroh stated, his hands wrapping a sail rope around the base of the little Cartaman ship they swipped from the water tribe. Zuko, who was standing on the edge of the ship, watched the mass of land as it got smaller in the distance. Y/n sat on the opposite end, her bare feet swinging in the ice cold water.

"Im tired." He mumbled.

"Then get some rest. A man needs his rest." Iroh replied, placing his hand on Zuko's shoulder.

Zuko turned around and his eyes fixated on y/n's back. She had been oddly quiet the entire ride. He slowly walked over and sat at the edge, a few feet away from her. He waited, waited for her to say something. A snarky comment, some teasing remark, anything. She didn't speak. Finally looking at her, he realized that she was crying. His heart ached a little for her. Why did he hate it when she cried?

He looked back to Iroh, who was staring at him with a knowing look. Zuko gave a shrugging expression, as if he was asking 'what do I do?'. Iroh only noded, but to Zuko that sounded like 'do what you think is right'. Turning back to the girl, he took a deep breath.

"Are... are you okay, y/n?"

"Yes."

"But you're, you know.....crying."

"And?" She snapped, her wet eyes glaring at him.

"Do you want to tell me what happened?" Little Zuko asked, looking over to y/n.

"No." Y/n sniffed angrily, the bruise on the side of her face throbbing painfully.

"He beat you again, didn't he?" Zuko asked in reference to Zhao. Y/n didn't reply. He sighed and turned to the girl, pulling her to him. His heart ached for her as she sobbed into his chest. His eyes were filled with pure concern as he stared down at her.

"Tell me whats wrong, mommy says when you talk things out, you feel better."

Zuko took another deep breath and moved a little closer to her, and finally he outstretched his arm and pulled her into his side. She didn't resist, her feet sliding through the water. His hand was secure against her side as she leaned against his chest, tears still streaming down her face.

"Tell me whats wrong... Mommy said when you talk things out, you feel better." He said softly, hoping she would remember where those words originated. Y/n chucked softly, wrapping her arms around his torso. When was the last time she got to hold him like this?

"Its a long story, just....please dont let me go, not yet..." She mumbled.

She sounded pitfiful, like a child, too afraid to be left alone. She sounded like him, the night she left the fire nation.

Zuko didn't speak, he was silent as he held her, watching the moon rise in the sky. And as y/n fell asleep in his arms, he swore he saw something forming around the moon, but before he could figure it out, it was gone.
