I say goodbye to my roommate closing the door behind me and begin walking downstairs so I can make the trek across campus just to get to the dining hall. As I exit my dorm I see new happy faces all around me.
Let's see if everyone is still this happy by finals week.
As I leave my dorm building the heat hits me like a truck, my North Dakota body isn't used to this Arizona weather and I doubt I'll ever get used to it. You may ask why did I choose to move from the freezing cold to the burning heat and the answer is simple.
To get a fresh start, a new experience, and maybe because I wanted to make sure that no one from my highschool would be here. My senior year of highschool wasn't the best and I needed to get out of my tiny town in North Dakota.
This was my first year of college and I'm destined for bigger and better things my town had to offer.
After ten minutes of walking and wiping off sweat I finally reach the air conditioned building and gladly open the door when a bubbly sorority girl jumps in front of me.
I just want to eat.
"Hi my name is Sarah Jane and I'm the treasurer of Kappa Delta Lambda. I just had to approach you. You look so cool and oh my gosh that hair!" She reaches out and I swiftly move away from her reaching fingers.
Once she realizes the discomfort on my face she retreats "Oh I'm sorry. Some people say I'm too friendly. Anyways from your look I think you'd definitely fit in with us. Our booth is right over there," She points at a table with other girls chattering amongst themselves and turns back to me "You can stop by anytime, we'll be here all day. Come check us out and learn more about us-. Wait sorry I didn't catch your name," She says.
That would be because you've been talking this whole time I mutter to myself.
"Alexis," I say, reaching out my hands as she shakes it.
"Alexis" She repeats after me. "Well it was really nice to meet you Alexis. I hope I get to see you more around campus,"
As campus leaves her mouth I quickly walk away fearing that she'll start the conversation up again somehow. I know what you're thinking, how am I gonna make friends if I shut people down like that? Honestly she's not the type of person I'd be friends with. I mean a single word hadn't come out of my mouth but somehow she knew that I'd be perfect for her sorority...hmm?
Sounds a bit superficial to me.
I finally enter the actual dining hall and hand my student ID card to the lady sitting on the chair. She looks from my card to me making sure that I was the person in the picture. She looks a little too long at my face before she hands me my card back.
I know that I look nothing like my ID picture. In that picture I was all glam, my curly brown hair was cascading down my shoulders, my lashes were put on perfectly, and my dark brown skin looked flawless.
In person that's another story, my curly hair was placed in a messy top pineapple and I barely had any makeup on. I was here to eat and get out. That's it.
I look around the busy dining hall, walking around, searching for a seat when I finally find an empty one next to a set of windows so I set my bookbag down, saving my spot.
I walk around the building finally settling on grabbing a few slices of pizza and chicken tenders.
I begin eating in my chair switching between looking outside the window and looking down on my phone as I casually scroll through Instagram. It's crazy how I follow a bunch of people who go here yet I don't have any actual friends.
