We were prepared, we knew what happened every year. Except Kat didn't. We should have thought of her. I had to refrain from cursing myself to find something for the poor thing.
  My coat was too big for her and I wasn't about to make one of the smaller kids give up their jacket, so I gently fingered her wings. The feathers were smooth and when I tried to separate them, more were underneath. There were about five layers of feathers and even though the temperature must have been below zero, the feathers were still warm.
  Eventually, I decided the wings would keep Kat warm and pulled them around her like a blanket. Leaning down, I whispered "it's going to be ok, Kat." I meant to sound reassuring but maybe not because I was lying. We were probably going to be eaten by beats just like every other kid they sent out here.
  As if she could sense my thoughts, the tears welled over and started streaming down Kat's face. I gave her a hug and wiped them away. That was about all I could do. Then, I picked her up and turned to the group.
  "Let's go." I commanded. Everyone turned and stared but after a moment, they all started walking towards me.
  Almost everyone, I mean. One of the boys firmly stood his ground
