Be aware that this is heavily inspired by another story I have read. Sadly I don't know who the author is. Hope you like it.

The gods looked at him expectingly. So did everyone else. Percy thought about it. It was the only way to protect his friends against the gods. "Yes," he said. He could not look Annabeth in the eyes.

...

The demigods returned to Camp Halfblood. Percy made sure demigods were claimed and houses built. But he never showed himself. The others blamed him. Percy understood that.

...

"I was wrong about you," Athena said. "You would leave a friend for the world. That only makes you less worthy of Annabeth." Percy couldn't agree more.

...

The seven's prophecy began. "I would have swapped you and Jason, had you still been mortal," Hera admitted. Instead she swapped Annabeth. Percy thought of interfering, but he didn't know how. Annabeth probably despised him anyways.

...

Jason, Piper and Leo arrived at Camp Halfblood. They went on a quest and succesfully returned. Meanwhile a guy named Pascal from the Hermes cabin searched for Annabeth. Percy could have told him where she was, but he didn't. He was jelous.

...

Annabeth became friends with Frank and Hazel. Everyone wondered who her godly parent was. They went on a quest. Percy knew that would have been him, had he not said yes. It hurt to think of the friends he had neglected.

...

Argo II sailed. No one doubted that Pascal should go. Everone knew he had a crush on Annabeth. Even Percy. But he didn't say anything. He did not deserve someone like her. Maybe it would be better if Pascal and Annabeth became a couple.

...

Argo II arrived at Camp Jupiter. Annabeth, Hazel and Frank came onboard, as the romans attacked. Annabeth hugged Pascal as the others told her how he had searched for her.

...

Percy watched over the ship, as it sailed in the sea. Frank and Hazel spent a lot of time together, as did Jason and Piper. Leo worked on Festus. Annabeth and Pascal sat in the stables and talked about the quest, but also about themselves and their previous lives. Annabeth cried as she told him about Percy Jackson. The guy who was a friend, but could have been more. Pascal comforted her. There was no one who could comfort Percy.

...

They arrived in Rome and Annabeth had to go on her solo quest. "Let me go instead," said Pascal. They argued. Percy was ashamed to admit he liked it. Annabeth and Pascal became friends again, as he explained he didn't doubt her strength. He just didn't want her to bear the burden. He knew what monster waited under Rome, and so did Annabeth.

...

Pascal followed her to the entrance. "Be careful," he said. Annabeth kissed him. On the mouth. "I will," she said. Pascal looked at her disapearing into the basement. Percy's rage released a flood in the US. Percy was ashamed of his actions. All of them. Anything there had been between him and Annabeth was gone. Left was only the pain.

...

Annabeth hung of the cliff. Pascal couldn't reach her. Percy used his powers to help her to the ship. He felt the weigh of the other's judgement as they recogniced the hero they had heard of. "Can we have a minute alone?" Percy asked. They looked at Annabeth. She nodded.
