LANGUAGES
PART ONE:
"Well, hello again." Liam said to Cory as they lined up to go into room 72 for their language class.
"Oh, hi." He replied awkwardly. "How long has your mind block been off?"
"A little over two weeks. So some things are still coming back to me." Liam said, almost like he didn't want to be questioned.
Tommy and Eva stood together at the back of the line, so Cory decided to go and join them. "That looked awkward." Tommy stated as Cory approached.
"Painfully awkward. That's my roommate. He doesn't seem to like me much." Cory looked around at the other students. "Does anyone know what Language this is? We've already learned Spanish-"
"My dorm neighbour said something about demon languages or something, but I don't know if she was yanking my chain or not."
"Anything is possible right now." Cory responded. "That woman in my dream... was my mother apparently. But she's dead now."
"So are my parents." Tommy said, looking down at his shoes. "And Eva's."
"Sorry I'm late girls and boys!" A cheerful voice sped past the line. "Nice to see you found your way here." Miss Bowen scanned the line of pupils. "Well, almost all of you. Where is Freya?"
"Here, ma'am." A timid voice said from around the corner. "Got a little disorientated."
Inside the classroom there were lots of books on he shelves, all thick and heavy looking books. A wall full of posters displaying symbols, strange symbols that almost looked... "Demonic?" Miss Bowen said, seemingly reading Cory's mind.
"Ummm."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to startle you." Miss Bowen sat down behind her desk. "Look around you. In this class we will be studying these symbols and words to better understand our enemies. Learn their languages, and believe me, there are a lot f them. In front of you there are two books. One of symbols and signs, one of languages. What I would like you to do, in pairs, is study them, make notes, practice drawing the symbols. By the end of the lesson, I want you to be able to draw at least two symbols or speak one sentence in any of the languages."
Tommy and Eva looked at each other. The books were so thick they had no idea where to start.
"I'm going with symbols first. Sounds easier." Tommy smirked.
"Are you not going to question any of this?"
"Nope. Just going along with it now. I'm starting to think that either this is a very strange dream that I will wake up from if it kills me, or, this is schoolwork now. Something about this doesn't seem strange anymore, after this mind block thing this morning... I'm starting to believe it. And if this is a dream, well, it's the strangest damn dream I think I may have ever had in my whole freaking life." Tommy said, his Texan accent sounding more prominent the more he spoke.
The symbols looked easy enough, but the further into the book they looked, the more complex and detailed they became. They chose one of the first ones, which was in the shape of a 'K' with a long diagonal line through the centre and what looked like a comma in the small v shape at the top of the K. They drew it over and over, until they no longer had to look at the image in the book to get it right.
Miss Bowen praised them on the drawings, and set them the task of learning a sentence, except they had spent so long looking at the symbols, they hadn't even attempted the languages. "You can take the books away with you, and learn one before your next class." Miss Bowen allowed.
At the end of the class, Miss Bowen stood before them. "Well done, kids. For your first class you have all done really well. I understand completely that this may be strange for some of you, and others may think this is the strangest damn dream they have ever had in their whole lives," She looked directly at Tommy, who smiled. "But as you learn more, and see more, you won't feel so... Worried. Or confused. That's all for today. You'll be joining Coach Dean for your Physical training this afternoon at three o'clock, and he does not like stragglers, so make sure you're on time... Freya." Miss Bowen winked.
After the whole class left, Cory stayed behind to speak to Miss Lydia Bowen. "Can I ask a question, Miss Bowen?"
"Of course."
"The rest of the pupils in this school... DO they know about any of this?"
"Not yet. Just the ones who reside in your wings. The others on the main building have no clue."
"What about the teachers?"
"Only me, and Headmaster Charleston."
"So when they get taken out of class, what do the other teachers think is happening?" Cory asked, now confused even more.
"We just tell them they're being transferred to a higher level of learning being held in these buildings." Miss Bowen shrugged. "They don't even question it... And please, call me Lydia."
PART TWO:
"Dorm-warming party tonight?" Asked Lee.
"A what, now?" Ada raised an eyebrow at the boy she didn't know.
"Well, like a housewarming but, obviously, in the dorms instead. I hear the East Wing had one last night. Which was why that Freya girl was late. She completely missed the Mind Block so they had to do it straight after Languages..."
"Okay." Ada interrupted. "I'll come, which room?"
"Third floor, hallway C, room 8." Lee scampered off to invite other people on the ground floor, where he'd intercepted Ada on her way to get changed for the Physical Training this afternoon. As she entered her room, Eva was already in there.
"Hey." She smiled.
"Lee invite you too?" Eva asked.
"Yeah, I got a feeling that guy is a babbler."
"Oh, yeah he went on for ages about some kids I don't even know. And the East Wing having a party. And how Freya was late because she was at the party... Apparently, he knows someone there who can get us 'beverages', as he called it. I think he meant alcohol. Anyway, that's when I shut him up."
"You going?"
"I might check it out." Eva glanced sideways at Ada who had a hopeful look on her face. "And yes, Tommy will be there too. Girl, you need to get that crush under control."
"I don't know what you mean."
"I saw you, while we were doing those symbols, I could see you staring at him doing his 'concentration-face'. It's kinda cute, I'll admit, but not staring kinda cute."
"Hey! You try saying that when you've got a crush on him." Ada defended herself.
"I never have and never will. But if you would like I can put in a good word. Saves you embarrassing yourself again. Little Miss Blusher." Eva winked.
"Oh, stop it."
"I'm not even sorry. Coming for dinner before Training?"
"Yeah, just let me get changed then I'll join you."
"And Tommy." Eva smirked.
"Stop it!" The bedroom door closed loudly behind her, and from inside, she could hear Eva giggling to herself.
