When I woke up, I didn't hear the buzzing of my alarm clock. I glanced, it's 6:45!!!! Oh no!!! I'm gonna be late. Well, no, if I don't take a bath and speed up! I changed my clothes, not bothering to see whether it's nice, washed my face, brush my teeth, and rushed downstairs.
"Happy birthday!!Hey Cath, do you wanna eat....
"No thanks bye! See ya later Mom!" I took my bag and ran to school.
When I got there, the bell rang. Okay, I'm exactly on time.
Someone bumped me. "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! You're now 10!!" Joan. "Where have you been?? I have been waiting here!" She complained.
"At home. Let's go, we're gonna be late."
"Hey, nice clothes, it really matches!!" She commented sarcastically. I rolled my eyes.
"Ugh, whatever."
"Ms. Sweetdude and Ms. Harris, you are late!" The teacher greeted us. Everyone snickered at the mention of "Sweetdude". We both mumbled an explanation and an apology and sat down on our seats.
School was boring as usual, and finally it ended. We walked home together, her house was just five houses away from mine.
"Oh Cath, there you are. I'm going to the grocery, is it okay if you watch James while I'm gone?" Mom asked.
"Okay sure."
"You can invite Joan over if you feel lonely."
"Ok."
I texted Joan: HEY DUDE, WANNA COME OVER? MOM'S AT GROCERY
KK, BE THERE RIGHT AWAY.
Ding dong. Wow she's fast.
"Joan!! Hey..." She gave me a small box wrapped in some paper.
"What's this for?"
"Birthday gift, dude."
"Oh right. Thanks Joan! I'm gonna open it...." It's a necklace. Frienship necklace. Pretty.
"Wow it's nice! Thanks!!" I wore the necklace.
"Welcome, now let's watch some DVD.....ugh I forgot to bring it. Wait I'll just go back and get it...."
Before I could protest, she was out of the house. How does she run so fast?... 5 minutes passed, she's still not here. Did something happen??... No, stop being crazy, she just probably can't find it.... It' so creepy to be alone. No, I'm not alone. James is upstairs. I need to check on him. Is he floating again? He's awake, playing with his stuff toy. Where is Joan?? I'm starting to get impatient... I took out my phone and listened to some music.
Suddenly, four men in black fell from the roof!! They were not hurt, though. James cried because of the commotion. Great. There are four holes on the roof now.
"Should we get her now?" Man#1 asked his companions.
"Of course not, stupid! Wait for Amira to come!" Man#2 hissed. What are they gonna do?? I just stood there, frozen. I can't escape. They're surronding me. More importantly, where is Joan?? She's supposed to be a watcher!! To protect me!... A figure at the door appeared. A woman. Is that...? No, it's not Mom. I can see the face clearly. She's a stranger. How did she get here? I thought I locked the door....oh..Joan! She forgot to lock it! Ugh! The woman had a kind, young face. She's around 25, maybe. That must be Amira.
"Boys, I told you to pass through the door, not fall on the roof and make big holes!! Now you're scaring her!!" Amira said. Now I'm confused. Is she the good guy or bad guy??
"Sorry." They said.
Amira turned to me and said,"I'm sorry for this mess, Catherine. But you must go with us. It's not safe here." Hmph, as if it's safe with you people. How does she know my name?? Suddenly, it hit me! Amira! She's one of the good sisters! I remember.
"How do you know my name? And I can't go with you." I replied.
"Yes, you need to!" A familiar voice said. Joan! She's here, finally!
"Joan? Why? I don't know them, and you're telling me to go?"
"Yes, Cath, you need to." Another familiar voice said. Mom's here. How? I didn't here her car... What a strange day.
Mom faced Amira and said,"Amira, you should have contacted me before taking her. So I could prepare."
Amira gave her an apologetic look and answered,"I'm sorry, Mrs. Sweetdude. Something's wrong with our Magic Ruby and we can't conatact you. Grazilda's plotting something, I can sense it."
"I understand. Can I speak with my daughter before she goes?" What?? She's letting me go?! Amira nodded. Mom took my hand and dragged me to her room.
I was first to speak. "Mom, you're letting me go? Why?"
"It's your training time." Oh, no. That means I won't see Mom until I'm 22!!
"But Mom! I don't want to leave you! What about James!? He'll miss me!"
"You have to, it's not safe here. I'll take care of James, don't worry."
"But what about school? What about Joan??"
"I'll take care of your school. As for Joan, I'll ask Amira if Joan can come."
"But what about the ROOF??"
"Oh, no problem. I'm Takinyo. I can fix it.... Now go." Tears kept falling from my face. This early? I'm leaving Mom?
"Oh, wait. I forgot to give you something." A bracelet. It has one charm. A ruby. "If you want to talk to me, just tap this gem and I'll show up. If I don't answer, it means I'm either busy or I'm not wearing the bracelet. Happy birthday, Catherine."
"Thanks Mom. Goodbye." I managed to say.
"Bye, Cath. Be brave. Don't give up. No matter what. Now go." She hugged me, and I hugged her back.
We walked to the other room. "Amira, is it okay if Joan goes with her? She might need a companion."
"Sure, she can come.Where's Catherine's and Joan's luggage? Are you not gonna bring?" Oh right.
"I'll go get it." I said.
"I'll be right back." Joan said, and she disappeared. Wow. Things are so weird today. I took my luggage and Joan was back. How does she do that?
"Bye Mom." I told her. Joan gave me a reassuring smile.
"Let's go now. We don't have much time." Amira said. Go where? I just followed her downstairs. There's this kind of machine that I don't know how to explain. It looks like it doesn't exist on earth. The door opened.
Maybe this is a teleporter.
"Go inside. All of us." Amira ordered. Joan went first, then me, then the four men in black, then Amira. The door closed, and I waved one last goodbye to Mom. I'm already missing her, and we're still here.
I might not even see her ever again. I wonder if I'll survive this "training". I imagined in my mind, unfamiliar kids in all ages, Superheroes, Takinyos, Fattees, all together in one place, training. Will I survive this? What if Grazilda kills me?
