the break

4 months after Macaría's 18th birthday. She and Adem have been together for 6 months now, but she notices something different in him. he's a lot more distant. Not bitter, or toxic, or mean, or abusive, just distant. time and time again she tires to talk to him but it just doesn't work.

Mac: i think we just need a little break, that's all. we've been around each other for a while now, maybe we just need some time apart

Callie & Alix: are you sure? what if he takes it as an actual break up ?

Mac: i don't think he would. i've been trying to talk to him but he just keeps pushing me away.

Callie: well if that's what you think is best, then just talk to him

Alix: yeah just talk to him about it

Mac: okay, i will

* a few hours later*

macaría is on her way to adem's apartment and is practicing in her head what to say to Adem

when she reaches his door she second guess herself and wants to turn back, but she decides that this is just a healthy thing that people need to do sometimes. after pushing her thoughts down she knocks on the door and he opens it

Adem: Hey

Mac: hi, can we talk ?

Adem: yeah of course come in

macaría walks in and sits on his couch

Mac: so i've been thinking

Adem: about what ?

Mac: well you've been distant lately, and every time i try to bring it up, you just shut me out. so i just want to know, is everything okay ?

adem swallows the lump in his throat and lies to macaría for the first time. but of course, she sees right through it.

Adem: y-yeah, everything is fine.

mac: o-okay, well then i honestly i think maybe we just need a small break from each other.

adem looks at her. she is looking at her hands as tears fill her eyes. he reaches to grab her hand but she moves hers.

adem: Mac, w-where is this coming from.

macaría turns to face Adem with tears pouring out of her eyes

Mac: you seem to have rethought your words to me, adem.

Adem: what ?

Mac: you said you could always trust me with whatever is going on in your life. clearly that was a lie. i know something is going on, but you can't seem to tell me. so, as much as this hurts me, i think we should take a break. just get some time to clear our heads. i'm not saying let's break up, let's just put this on pause.

Adem: Is that really what you want ?

Mac: of course i don't want this. but i think it will be better for us. i'm not saying let's see other people. i just think that a small break will help us know where we stand

Adem: alright then, for how long ?

Mac: i don't know, a month ?

Adem: okay.

Mac: i know how shitty it sounds but maybe we will come out stronger when the month is over.

Adem: yeah i see your point.

macaría hugs adem and gives him a kiss

mac: i love you so much okay ? i'm not going anywhere. i'll always be here for you if you need it. and you know this.

without being able to change her mind, she gets up and leaves the apartment.

she gets in her truck and immediately regrets her decision and starts balling her eyes out.

*adem's pov*

why didn't i just tell her that i'm not getting the surgery anymore!?

*adem was gonna get a surgery to graft a vein above his liver to see if it will help his disease*

god adem why are you so dumb. you probably just lost the best person in your life. what if she meets someone better within the month and ends up with him !? wait, no she wouldn't do that. the whole reason she's putting us both through this is to come out stronger in the end. i really hope this month just goes by fast.

the month went by slowly. every day feeling worse and worse for the both of them. by the time they had a week left they were so happy to finally be together again soon.
