Chapter 2: Scott's POV

"Sweetie! Get down here, they've just arrived!"

My mom's shrill voice echoed in my ears. She knows that she doesn't need to yell, right? After all, I do have supernatural hearing abilities.

"Coming mom!" I hollered back.

Today was the day my new "sister", Faye, moves in with us, officially. We had met a few times prior, but she never really left a lasting impression on me. That might be a bit of a problem, seeing how she now lives in a room that's literally a yard away from mine. But hopefully, today will be different. After Faye is all moved in and settled, I'm supposed to take her out to lunch and show her around town a little bit. My mom wants to come, really badly, but we both decided that it would be better if we got to know each other one on one.

The front door swung open, and I could hear my mom enthusiastically greeting our new family member. Shit, I'm not even dressed yet! Having practically just woken up, I was still in my boxers, so I quickly slipped on a dark grey t-shirt and old sweatpants before jogging downstairs.

"This is so wonderful! You're absolutely going to love it here! The high school is great, our neighbors are very welcoming, and we've already got our spare room all set up for you!" Jesus, mom. You could tone down the energy, just a bit. She was hugging Faye enthusiastically, swaying from side to side and squealing. Faye hugged her back, but gave me a pleading look as soon as we made eye contact.

"Hey! Why don't I show Faye to her room so she can unpack a bit?" My mom released her and turned towards me. Immediately, Faye took a deep breath, clearly relishing the air that my mom's embrace had deprived her of. "Okay, okay. I know when I'm not needed." My mom sighed, brushing off her nurses scrubs. "Besides, I'm going to be late for work, and you two have some catching up to do! I'm so sorry that I have to jet off like this, but I'll miss my shift if I don't."

It makes me feel bad, how hard my mom works to keep us living a normal life. Our family has enough to deal with, what with money issues and the fact that half of this town is out to kill me. Now that there is going to be another mouth to feed, she has been working her ass off, taking multiple shifts at the hospital, even working weekends. Hopefully she'll be able to have a more normal life now that she has a normal daughter to think about.

I gave her a quick squeeze and peck on the cheek, before she darted out of the front door and to the family car. As she pulled out of the driveway, I turned to Faye. "Sorry, she's just really excited to have another girl in the house for once." I said, rubbing the back of my neck awkwardly. "It's fine." Faye whispered. "She seems nice. I mean, you both seem nice, not that I'm drawing conclusions or anything. I mean, I haven't exactly known you for that long, not that I don't trust you two or whatever! It's a bit early for judgements, and I don't want to seem prejudicial, just-".

I cut off her nervous rambling while it was still possible. "Do you need help with your bags?" Faye must have realized how long she had been talking for, because her cheeks instantly flushed red. "Yeah, if it's not too much trouble." She muttered, suddenly very interested in her shoe laces. Poor girl.

We both went out to her car, a tan 2006 Taurus. Nothing too flashy, but very boring. But who was I to judge, I share a car with my mom, and Faye didn't have a lot of money in her family. The front bumper had a sizable dent and several scratches, probably from ramming into something substantial. Faye noticed me eyeing the damage.

"Oh yeah, that. I, uh, spun out a little and, um, hit a...tree." Sure, sure. Her heartbeat made it clear that she was lying, but I'm not one to pry into other's lives.

We both approached the trunk, and I went to open it. The thing stuck like a fly in mud, refusing to budge. Placing a foot on the back bumper for leverage, I tried again. Nothing.

"Are you sure this is unlocked?" I asked through gritted teeth, straining against the door. "Yeah, pretty sure. Here, let me try." I shifted to the side so Faye could have a go.

Let's face it though. If I can't get that thing to open with my supernatural strength, how could she possibly - A click interrupted my thoughts as the trunk smoothly popped open without a hitch. Ok, I stand corrected. "Well that's emasculating." I muttered, rubbing the back of my neck again. Faye giggled, tucking a loose strand of auburn hair into the thick braid going down her back. "Don't be embarrassed. Jake can be a bit stubborn sometimes."

I raised my eyebrows, amused. "You named your car Jake?" Faye stood up with a sudden confidence, and locked her icy blue eyes with mine.

"Yes, Scott, I named my car Jake. Don't judge just because your car isn't as awesome as mine."

I held my hands up, smirking. "I meant no offense!"

With that, I grabbed a few of Faye's bags while she grabbed the others, and we walked back to my front door in a comfortable silence.
