Chapter 5: Faye's POV
"Well, hello there kids! Welcome to Ronnie's Diner!"
An overly cheery woman approached our booth, sporting 50's style waitress-wear, plump rosy cheeks, and a friendly grin. For some reason, all I could see when I looked at her was a female version of Santa Claus.
"My name is Doris, and I'll be taking care of you. What can I get for ya'll today?"
Her southern drawl was comically thick, especially for a Californian.
Doris whipped out a pad of paper and a pen, presumably to take our orders. I looked across the table to Scott, silently signaling him to go first. There were so many choices on the menu that I still haven't decided what to get.
"I'll have the large chicken platter with a side of onion rings and a Coke." Scott replied quickly, almost reflexively, as he handed his menu back to the waitress. That seems like a lot of food for one person! Whatever, at least Scott knows what he likes here. I on the other hand, am severely indecisive, floating from one choice to another every two seconds.
"And for you, sweetie?" Doris turned to me, pen poised to take down my order. Crap, I'm still not ready!
I faced Stiles, who was sitting to the left of me, hoping to buy a little more time. "Why don't you go first?"
He nodded, a little confused, and then looked back to the waitress. "We'll both have a cheeseburger with a side of curly fries and a rootbeer." Doris looked between the both of us, a small smirk twitching at her lips.
Well that was nice! Plus, as soon as he said it, I realized that that was exactly what I had been craving the entire time.
I flashed Stiles a greatful smile, which he responded to with a playful wink. Even though I met this guy less than thirty minutes ago, I couldn't help ducking my head to conceal my reddening cheeks.
"Alrighty then, the food should be out soon!" Doris grinned again and walked away.
As soon as she was gone, I nudged Stiles with my shoulder. "You really didn't have to order for me!"
He nudged me right back, but more in light-hearted retaliation than actual annoyance. "It's fine. Besides, I'm paying, so I need to know that I'm spending my money on a quality meal!"
"What?" I sat up straighter in the booth, which was difficult because to the vinyl seats stuck to my bare legs. "I can't let you pay for my food! I just met you."
"You can, and you will. It's non-negotiable!" Stiles crossed his arms over his chest, waiting to see if I would argue. I decided against it. After all, he's just trying to be nice and pay for my food! There's no point in making a big deal out of it.
After about ten minutes, Doris came back with the food and drinks in hand. "Ok, I've got your chicken and Coke young man!" She set Scott's food down. "And the cheeseburgers and rootbeers for the happy couple!"
Scott snorted, covering his face with a shirtsleeve. What did she just say? Does the waitress think that Stiles and I are boyfriend and girlfriend? It's probably just because he ordered for me earlier. "Um, actually-" I started to correct her before I was cut off.
"Thank you so much!" Stiles wrapped an arm around my shoulders and nuzzled his chin into the crook of my neck. I tensed up under the extra weight and intimate contact, not sure what to do. I could feel his warm breath against my neck, making me shiver for some reason. What does he think he's doing?
"Oh, well isn't that sweet!" She clutched her hands to her chest, apparently overcome with emotions. "You've got quite the the gentleman there young lady!"
