Chapter 6: Faye's POV

We only ended up spending about thirty minutes at the animal clinic, and that mostly consisted of an uneventful tour and Dr. Deaton occasionally pulling Scott over to the side for a hushed question or two.

It was strange, and not only because the two of them would drop off in the middle of a sentence and silently move out of earshot, like they both had the same idea. It was also strange because of Stiles' reaction to them.

Every time Scott and Dr. Deaton would move away, he would pull me in the opposite direction and begin to insist that I "Look at this!", or "Check this out, Faye!". He was obviously trying to distract from whatever the other two were discussing, and not doing a very good job of making it seem natural.

I tried not to care that much, going along with Stiles' feeble attempts to preoccupy me. If whatever Scott is discussing with the doctor is that important to be kept secret, then I won't be the nosy bitch who pries too deep, too soon.

Instead, I chose to focus on something else, something that had been bothering me ever since we walked into that clinic. The "security system". With every passing minute, I grew more and more doubtful that the technology Deaton described even existed.

Where would you even purchase a system like that? Doesn't that kind of thing only work with dogs if they're wearing a special collar? How could it possibly know to push me back if I didn't have one on? Does that kind of thing run on electricity? And even if it did exist in the manner that Deaton described, which is highly debatable, why would a veterinarian need it so badly?

Maybe something bad happened here, something that Deaton would take any precautions necessary to make sure it never happened again.

I didn't have time to delve into the topic however, because an elderly woman barged into the clinic seeking medical attention for her hilariously obese cat. Apparently, it had somehow managed to consume one of her slippers. Yes, an entire freaking slipper was inside that boat of a feline.

"I'm so sorry about this, but I wouldn't kick you guys out unless it was an absolute emergency!" Dr. Deaton apologized for the hundredth time as the three of us turned to leave. "It was nice meeting you Faye! Maybe we'll run into each other around town or something!" He called out optimistically.

I just smiled and nodded, not quite sure if I felt the same way. Scott and Stiles obviously trust this guy, but there's something about the doctor that's unsettling. About the way he talks, and addresses me. Calm, collected, knowledgable. It almost feels like he knows more about me than I do, however that makes sense.

The boys and I reached the wooden gate that had trapped me earlier, the one with the weird "electric fence" thing. I assumed that it only affected people trying to enter the clinic, so I nonchalantly extended a hand to pull it open.

Before my fingers even came close to contact with the gate, a skinny hand yanked mine out of the way and abruptly pushed it open for me. I looked up, startled, to see Stiles holding it open.

Well, that's weird. I think that I have the ability to open the door myself, thank you very much. Part of me just thought he was being a gentleman though, so I thanked him and walked through.

But another part of me, the more perceptive part, noted the panic behind his huge amber eyes, his sense of urgency. Like something would have happened if I opened it myself, something neither he or Scott would've been able to explain. Whatever that was, I don't know.

Even with these thoughts and observations plaguing my mind, I decided to just push the idea away and accept the fact that he opened the gate to be nice. I mean, one or two little unexplained incidents are not enough incentive to analyze a person's every move!
