Chapter 7: Faye's POV
I had dropped Scott off at the house about an hour ago, telling him that I wanted to be alone for a while.
I wasn't lying or anything either. The Beacon Hills Preserve forest that seemed to be present throughout this town had been calling out to me ever since I got here. Back when I lived with my mother, we had a small forest behind our house that I would often run to in times of distress.
Although, using the term "forest" as a descriptor is a bit generous when referring to those misshapen growths.
They looked like something out of a Tim Burton film, all dark, gnarled, and twisted. But back then it didn't matter, as long as they could hide me long enough to cry my eyes out and then compose myself.
These were real, bonafide trees, with thick trunks and cascading branches. And they stretched for miles, making it easy to get lost in them, physically and emotionally. I carved a path among them as I trekked through the forest, brushing my pale, slender fingers across the rough bark.
I felt completely tranquil, like nothing could break me from this state of utter calm.
Birds sang in the distance. Crickets chirped up to me from the soft, leaf-blanketed ground. An occasional insect would buzz past my ear.
None of it disturbed my sense of nirvana, not a sound. At this point I had no idea where I was or where I was going. Over an hour had passed, and my feet still continued to move one in front of the other on their own accord.
In hindsight, ballet flats may not have been the best choice when going for a hike in the woods. The soles were already worn thin from years of overuse, diminishing any former feeling of traction. These shoes were way too big when I first got them, so when they actually came close to fitting, I started to wear the absolute shit out of them.
Mom always hated them, especially because I would wear them inside so often. They would click on the wooden floors constantly and leave scuff marks, but I insisted that a lady must keep her shoes on, even whilst in her own home.
Wow, I really was a brat, wasn't I?
Currently, I was constantly slipping around because the damn shoes couldn't grip to a surface even if they had suction cups glued to the bottom.
This became very apparent when I attempted, unsuccessfully, to hoist my body over a fallen tree. It was blocking the path that I wanted to take, and going over the gigantic log seemed to be the only option.
After swinging one leg over the mossy bark, I tried to push off of the tree with my other one swiftly and land gracefully. However, because mother nature hates me, I ended up lodging the tip of my foot in a rotten section of the trunk.
My stomach plummeted as I barreled clumsily the few feet to the ground, flailing the whole way down. "Oh fu- oomph!" I cried out before belly flopping onto the dirt, my jaw painfully bouncing off of a rock.
"God damn, that hurt like a bitch..." I groaned rubbing the sore spot just below my chin as I rolled carefully onto my back. Great, now the front of one of my only decent looking shirts is covered in mud and twigs, and god knows I don't exactly have the money to replace it.
"Just my luck." I mumble, sitting up so I could pull some of the leaves and crap out of hair. At least no one saw me embarrass myself.
"Hey, are you alright Faye?"
Oh you have got to be kidding me!
I looked up from my low vantage point on the ground to see a young man, maybe early twenties, approaching me with a slightly concerned expression on his brooding face.
