Sitting down in front of a small, portable heater Page had scavenged from a dumpster and got it working I actually enjoyed my first night as a Freak.

Everyone was happy, we got all our food back and I'm pretty lucky to be found by a group that wouldn't kill me. Unlike some other groups I've heard about.

When the moon was high in the sky most of us settled down with hammocks, sleeping backs and makeshift mattresses. It was only Rose and I that were awake, and our eyes were fixed on the starry night sky.

"...how is it? Downtown Kinetown, I mean." Rose asked, breaking the silence.
"It's... complicated. The rioters are burning pretty much every store, Military training camps are as busy as ever and schools are boring, as usual."

Rose nodded, "Sounds about right."

We kept the silence for a few more minutes until I remembered about Allie and Justin. They're probably in Military right now, sleeping. I wonder if I'll see them again.

I swear Rose was a psychic when she asked me another question. "You miss your friends? Before the injections?"

I turned to her, her eyes filled with compassion.
"...yeah."
She nodded again. "I missed my friends  too. A lot."
"What were they like?"
"Hmm... they were a bit like me, they can get hyper in a matter of a second, recognize the smell of anything chocolate-y from a mile away and help each other in any way they could. They were also tall, unlike me. They were pretty, one with brown eyes that could draw anything in their mind and make it happen. And the other with gorgeous hazel eyes that could bake the most amazing desserts in the world!" Her eyes lit up and the edges of her mouth curling into a smile. "What about you?"

"Mine were a male named Justin, they were compassionate and could take you down in the matter of a second no matter what the odds. The other was Allie, the literal definition of bad*** in terms of fighting. Allie was also protective, almost like a second mom. I know they're getting- no, going into Military no matter what." Rose giggled, "They sound like great friends!"

"They really were." I gazed into the starry night sky again before getting up to head into the peaceful oblivion of sleep.
