Gideon and his friends chatted with me along the way, telling me about the views of Reverse Falls, and how they were willing to take me for a tour, instead of me going to places alone and seem all mopey.
I knew I wasn't, and I knew better than any of them that I saw what I saw. I was with a boy and his name was Dipper.
I watched the group chatter and gossip about people from school, slowly falling behind with them as we entered neared the Mystery Shack.
Suddenly, one of Gideon's friends came up to me. 'So, you went to the docks alone?' he said.
I remember him, Gideon and him met up one day after school, leaving me to lag behind them, but this boy was nice, he kept gazing back to see if I was still there, and every time he did, I would give an awkward smile, compared the gleaming one he gave me. Not only did I feel flustered for that, but I also forgot his name, which started with a 'C' or something of the sort.
After that, I saw him casually at school, giving me waves and
'Funny you should ask something like that, what makes you think that?' I fired back in a joking way.
'You look sulky and rejected after Gideon said you were crazy. No offense. What's up?' He looked back at me, kicking at the dirt on the forest floor.
'Nothing that needs to be said, you all think I'm crazy anyway.' I smiled, not even concentrating on the conversation.
'I'm sure you aren't.' He then held up his hand and crossed his fingers, smiling widely. 'I promise.'
'Fine.' I shifted my eyes to him, batting down his crossed fingers. 'I'll tell you, but as you said, don't judge.'
'I never said I wouldn't judge.'
My eyes and mouth widened. 'I am utterly betrayed.'
'Trust me, I'll try.'
'Only try?' The corners of my lips opened into a laugh, then into a chuckle.
'Yes, isn't that good enough?' He teased back.
'Alright. I'll spill.' It wasn't like I was going to repeat what I said to Gideon, and I wasn't close to whoever this friend was, so the thing I told him couldn't exactly put a lever on me. I explained the reason I was at the docks and the person I saw at the docks. He didn't even say anything, he just listened to me ramble about something he may barely be able to comprehend. I made sure I never made mention of who the boy I met was, but told Gideon's friend that I knew nothing more than what we talked about.
Soon, we just chatted on the sofa in the living room while the rest of Gideon's friends and Gideon went off to the dining room.
'It was strange of course, but I am not sure why you guys couldn't see.'
'Now you're starting to sound like a crazy person.'
'And there you were saying you wouldn't judge.'
'Fair point.'
I nodded in response to his, but then, to my surprise, his expression turned serious.
'But what if this is real, Pacifica?' His curiosity was peaking and he sat up.
'I thought you didn't believe me. You said I was 'crazy'.' I was surprised that he remembered my name, but I did not with his.
'Let me think about it, I think this might sound like something I've only heard in a rumour. I think I'll help you do some digging and listening around since I've been here longer anyway. Did anything weird happen to you? Or did you hear anything weird from the townspeople?'
I tapped my finger on my chin, 'Not that I can remember of.' I blurted out while shaking my head.
'Did anyone make conversation with you while you were out?'
'Oh yes, other than the lady who sold me those cupcakes, which you guys didn't see.' I grimaced and hesitated for a while before continuing on. 'There was a man in the grocery store who said something weird.'
'Tell me.'
'Umm... if I can jog my memory and remember.' I poked at my temples, trying hard to remember.
'Take your time.' He was looking at me intently, expecting me to say anything at any second.
'Something about being careful of angels and devils?'
'Got it. I'll be leaving now.' It was as if what I said was some kind of spell, I had never seen someone get ready to leave so fast.
'Wait. I forgot your name.' I kept a distance from him.
He smacked his hand over his forehead like he was in a big shock. Then answered with a question instead. 'So you could've been talking to a stranger this whole time?'
'Yes, now tell me your name.'
'Cody.' Then, he turned around to face the dining room, he pointed over to a girl with black hair similar to his. 'That girl, she's in Gideon's grade, and she's my sister, Candy. You guys might be friends.'
I peeked through the doorway to see the girl more clearly, I was struck dumb on the spot. It was that girl who was talking to Mabel during lunch.
'Now I'll be going now. Also, happy birthday.'
'Oh, thanks.' I waved him off, standing still where I was until I saw him go out the door. Soon I was alone in the living room and I crept closer to the doorway of the dining room to see her more clearly, but as if she knew what I was up to, we made eye contact.
I smiled.
She gave me a condescending look and continued talking with the others like nothing happened. Candy kept laughing and smiling, unlike the girl who followed Mabel with that other girl, Glenda or something.
Maybe she recognised me from school, did Mabel talk bad about me? Maybe Candy talked about me too? Since they kept giggling and snickering during lunch in my direction too.
I went up to my room and just looked around it. It was very unlike the one I had at home, but I don't even know if I had a place at 'home' anymore.
I just got ready to sleep but could still hear lots of shouting and happy chatter downstairs, maybe I won't have any peace, here or at 'home'.
