“Ireland … Ireland wake up.” I wake up to Jessie shaking me.
“What? It’s like midnight. What do you want?” I say trying to find him in the dark.
“It’s the rock a showed you earlier … I want you to see it.”
“Can’t that wait till morning?” I said
“Yes, no, just come on.” Said Jessie hauling me out of bed.
I put on my jeans and jacket and slipped in my converse. When Jessie opened the back door clod air hit me and I started to shiver. Jessie saw this and said that if we held hands I would get warmer, personally I just think he wanted to hold my hand, but hey it worked. As we got closer to the rock the more light there was then I realized it was the rock that was glowing. When we reached it I looked at Jessie.
“Has it ever done this before?” I asked
“No why do you think I brought you?”
I looked back at the rock and held out my hand the closer I got to it the more this high pitched ringing rose. When I finally reached the stone I laid my hand on top of it and the ringing stopped so did the glowing. I looked back at Jessie. After a moment I heard a screeching sound in my ears and bent down slapping my hands over my ears. I could see Jessie calling my name but I couldn’t hear him, all I could hear was that stupid screeching.
After a couple of minutes the screeching subsided and I could hear Jessie.
“Ireland! Ireland!” I was screaming so I stopped.
“I can hear you now.” I said
“Good.” He said with a flush of relief. “What happened?”
“Well when I went over to touch the rock I heard ringing and then when I touched it this high-pitched screeching started and I couldn’t here anything else.”
“That’s weird, are you okay?” he asked
“Yah I’m fine but I just want to go back to the house.”
“Okay.” He said still sounding concerned. When I tried to stand I fell into his arms. I can’t walk. Great.
“Uh … Jessie,”
“I got it.” He said as he picked me up and carried me back to the house.
Once we got back to the house Jessie put me back in bed and helped me out of my shoes.
“Thanks.” I said
“No problem Peirce.”
“We can go back tomorrow.” I say as Jessie switches feet.
“Are you sure.”
“Yah, I’ll be fine.”
“Okay … do you want an icepack for your head?”
“Please?” I said putting my hand in my throbbing head. A couple minutes later he comes back in with and ice pack. He sits on my bed and presses it firmly on a bump I must have gotten from the fall.
“That’s better … thanks.” I said
“No Problem … Night Peirce.”
“Night.” I said taking the icepack. He left and I settled back into bed.
When I wake up I get dressed and go out into the hall. Let’s see if I can find the dining room. Okay so left here … right … right … left… perfect.
“Ireland? What happened to your head?” I turned around to find Troy standing there. Darn. I forgot about the bump on my head.
“I uh fell off of my bed last night.” I said. Troy laughs.
“No you didn’t … Sorry but you’re so lying to me.”
“Am not.”
“Yes, you are. You have an unbelievable amount of tells.”
“Oh yah, like what.”
“Let’s see here uh the way you bite your lip, you get mean, you say uh in front of everything, and you look at the floor when your speaking.” He said counting the tells on his fingers.
“Uh no I don’t.” he gives me a ‘told you so’ look.
“Tell me what happened.”
“It’s none of your business.” I say as a fold my arms and walk away.
After we are done eating breakfast Jessie and I head back out to the rock or at least what’s left of it.
“What the?” said Jessie
“That’s probably what hit me last night … it was too dark to see.” The rock looks like it had exploded after I touched it.
“Ireland … “said Jessie sounding scared.
“What … what’s wrong.”
“Y ... your eyes are glowing!”
“What?” I pulled out my phone and flipped the camera to the front. As soon as I saw my eyes I dropped my phone. They are glowing!
“W … what’s happening!” I said grabbing the sides of my head.
“I ... I don’t know. We should go tell mom.” Said Jessie. I picked up my phone and took another look but my eyes had stopped glowing.
“K.” I said as we headed back. Once we reached the backyard I started to feel this wired feeling that made me sick. Kind of like the feeling you get when you’re in a plane and you just went off the ground. Just then I began to float.
“Uh Jessie.”
“Yah,” he looked back “Ireland!” He grabbed my arm. ”What is going on!?”
“I don’t know but I bet it has something to do with powers!”
“Mom! … Mom!” Jessie called out. A couple seconds later Mrs. Kelly sprints out with a rope. She ties it to my waist. Oh great now I’m a freaking balloon!
“Really.” I say
“I know it’s not the best but it will have to do until you can learn to control your powers … I knew this would happen soon but a never expected it to be now.” Said Mrs. Kelly as she floated me over to the house. “Your brother is tied down in the library.” Once we reached the library I noticed what she meant by tried down. My brother was tied down to a chair floating on a rope too. I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Hey you’re floating too!” he said defending himself.
“Well since you two are twins both of your powers will all activate at the same time,” explained Mrs. Kelly “Although I don’t know the cause of your powers, I’m guessing it has something to do with the bump on Irelands head.” I looked at Jessie and told him to go ahead.
“K so a couple months ag I was in the woods and I found this rock… well I showed Ireland and when she touched it she started screaming and claims to have heard …”
“Screeching.” I said
“Right screeching and the rock exploded.” It was quiet for a second. The quiet was interrupted by a big boom that shook the house. I looked at Mrs. Kelly and then another one came and Troy and I stopped floating.
“They found us.” She said with a terrified look on her face. “Quick to the cellar.” Before I knew it we were running through a maze of rooms until we arrived at a locked door. Jessie punched in the passcode and we ran down into the cold shelter.
