Flashback:
10 year old Kabir:
Orphanage:
He just turned ten years old few days ago. But he felt a lot older. The orphanage people did the cake cutting thing and he got new clothes which he didn't care about. For him that didn't make any difference.
The experiences he had in these few months were going to stay with him for his lifetime. Though the older kids no longer messed with him intentionally but he had his days. He made sure that his reputation kept him out of unnecessary trouble but some things just can't be avoided. He still hadn't opened his mother's box. He wasn't even planning to.
He still hasn't forgiven her for leaving him alone. She was his everything and now he has nothing. He was one of many in the crowd. No one cared if he scored well in his exams nor was anyone there to scold him when he didn't perform well. He just looked at his guitar which he has stopped playing.
It reminded him of his mother. She was the one who taught him about the cords for the first time when he was five. She used to say he has natural talent for it. He didn't care if his talent got wasted. He didn't care if his life got wasted. He didn't care for anything at all.
The only rays of sunshine in his life were two very young kids. They were siblings, under five years and were always smiling and talking. They used to call him bro and he used to teach them to read and write and play with them.
The girl Ruhi was so cute and when she called him BB, short for Bir Bro in her baby voice all the darkness around him faded. The little guy Amaan followed him all day and copied all his actions. They made his stay here tolerable. He didn't know what he would do without them. But even that didn't last long.
Yesterday he received the news that they were getting adopted. The orphanage made sure that they got into the same family. He should be happy for them. Their new parents looked good people.
But he didn't believe in people's looks. He observed their faces and realised that they were genuinely happy to adopt. He also listened to them talking when no one was around them. They were nice couple who can't have kids. The guy was a government official and the lady was home maker. Ruhi and Amaan were going to good people.
But he can't help but feel a sense of loneliness. Not that he wanted to be adopted by anyone. He can't for the life of him imagine himself calling someone else as mom. As for dad, it was out of equation. He just wanted to stay here till he can afford to go someplace on his own and they made his stay bearable. But now they were also going.
He wanted to shout and to be angry, to cry but he can't. He can't afford to show his emotions. Emotions are weakness.
So he sat with them and gave them chocolate for one last time and told them not to feel any fear. He taught them to dial 100 if they felt anything wrong. He told them not to be scared of anyone, not of their new mumma papa or any of their relatives. He told them not to let anyone bully them in their new school. He assured them that he will call them at their new home every week on the number he got by sneaking around. He didn't know how much they understood but he tried to explain them the best he could. Lastly he told them to not take any beatings lightly and to not cry.
"If someone slaps you once, slap them twice and do not cry in front of them. Okay?" He said.
They both nodded.
"Remember everything I said. Alright?"
"Remind us again when you call us next week BB. I can't remember it all at once." Ruhi said in her baby voice.
"I will remember it all Bro and I will also remind her every time." Amaan said in a proud voice and Kabir smiled.
"Good champ! Take care of your little sister and also of yourself." He said and bumped his fist in a friendly manner.
"BB now I don't have to wait for my turn to get my hair done right? My new mumma will do that for me right?" Ruhi asked her innocent question and Kabir's heart melted at her cuteness. He will miss her innocent questions.
"She will princess. She will do everything for you." He replied.
"She will make my favourite food for me, whenever I want?" Amaan asked.
"Yes champ, she will." He said.
"Your mother did all that for you, BB?" Ruhi asked and Kabir's heart constricted. Ruhi's mother died in childbirth. Amaan was just two year old that time. Their father had died in accident. Both their parents were orphans so no one was there for children.
They never experienced mother's love but they knew he had mother when they asked about his guitar he told them that it was his mother's gift.
"Of course she did it, Ru. She even gave him gifts. That's how bro got the guitar right? She also taught him to play. She taught him how to read and write. That's how bro is so smart, isn't it bro?" Amaan said in his little voice.
Kabir felt an overwhelming feeling inside him. It was a long time since someone talked about his mother. He thought about her all day, every day. But it was all anger. He was so angry with her for leaving him alone that he forgot what all she did for him.
These question asked by these two innocent souls were like reality check. A reminder about what all his mother had done for him and how much has she bore. A single lady, left alone in the world, betrayed by all men in her life.
Her father left her alone because she made one mistake. The love of her life betrayed her and now even after her death; her son hated her.
And for what? For dying due to an illness. His mother was not a strong lady but she fought for him. She lived for him and he was lucky to have her.
The realisation stuck him as naturally as wind and the relief rained over him like a storm; silent but leaving an impact nonetheless.
For the first time after his mother died, he smiled genuinely remembering her smile.
He could hear the orphanage manager coming to take away the siblings, but he didn't feel sad or lonely this time; instead he felt really happy and relieved; for now the future of these two innocent souls was secure.
"You are right champ. My mom taught me everything she could. She was awesome. Your new mother will be awesome too. So Princess and Champ don't worry. Everything will be okay." He said and kissed their foreheads in a brotherly manner before saying good bye.
Unlike he previously thought he didn't feel totally miserable. Instead he has one thing in his mind. He ran towards his room with only one goal in his mind.
It was time to finally open his mother's box.
Little did he know that he wasn't just opening the box but also a door to past and a way to future. The contents of the box changed his life.
And that was how a ten year old Kabir Shah found himself on the door of the person he hated the most in the world.
His father.
