kenma's POV:
I try not to gape. She's at the door wearing a dress. I never even knew she owned a dress. It isn't dressy, though, which I expected. Her hair frames her face in waves, and it looks impossibly soft. Her entire outfit is a monochromatic black, like mine.
"We match!" she says as if reading my thoughts.
I nod and smile. I feel awkward as hell.
"Ok, let's get outta here before my mom comes and asks a million questions,"
"y/n, are you going now???"
y/n rolls her eyes and laughs. "Yes, mom. Bye,"
"Nooo wait!!" her mom runs up to the door and looks at us. I feel attacked for some reason but smile a little to hopefully appear friendlier. "Are you two going on a date?"
y/n looks down fidgets uncomfortably and cracks her knuckles. I've noticed she does that when she feels awkward. I look down at my shoes. I would answer her question, but I'm not so sure what to say because even I don't know the answer, and from the looks of it, neither does y/n.
"Mom, Kenma's my friend," she laughs. "C'mon, let's go," she tugs at my hand and walks out the door. "Can you tell me where we're going now?"
"Nope,"
She groans and rolls her eyes.
"If it makes you feel any better, your hair looks really good,"
"You better watch out. Now I'm tempted to cur your hair too," she smirks. "You know I'd do it when I have the chance,"
"Scary,"
"So how are we going to get to this place?"
"We do this thing with our legs and feet. It's called walking. Want me to teach you?"
She shoves me slightly to the side. We start to walk down the little alley near our houses and enter the main street.
"You need to close your eyes now,"
"What?! No. You're gonna walk me into a pond, aren't you?"
"Why would I do that???"
"Cause you're kinda evil,"
I roll my eyes and cover her eyes with my hands. "Now you have no choice,"
"I hate you," she mumbles quietly.
y/n's POV:
Kenma guides me down the street somewhere with his hands still clamped around my face. As scared as I am of tripping, I know he won't let me fall.
"We're here," I can hear a grin in his voice.
He lets his hands fall from my face and I look up to see the McDonalds logo. I scream with laughter. Only Kenma could make me get dressed up for a fast food restaurant. I turn to face him. He looks a little nervous, probably for my reaction, but his eyes are dancing. He looks so adorable like that it makes me want to come a little closer and kiss him.
"I love it," I'm serious.
We go head inside and he holds the door open for me. I look over my shoulder. He's smiling at me. My heart practically melts on the spot. We order way too much food and find a table.
"So," Kenma says, picking up a fry. "Your mom,"
I shake my head. "Sorry about that. She wants to know every single thing I do,"
"Better than having a mom who doesn't care about you, right?" he asks uncertainly.
My heart breaks for him. "Oh no. I'm so sorry. I'm so insensitive. I- I didn't mean it that way,"
"No. You're fine. That's not how I meant it either," his voice softens.
I feel like I should bring up my answer to her question earlier, but I'm not sure what I would say or if he even remembers.
"Just.. Just ignore her questions in the future. She doesn't know what she's talking about most of the time," I figure I'm playing it safe.
Something flashes across his face. It disappears before I can figure it out.
"Yeah?" he laughs slightly. "So why'd you're mom think that uh..."
"I don't know," I decide to be upfront. "Why were you being awkward?"
He tilts his head to the side. "Why were you being awkward?"
"I was not,"
"Yes you were,"
"Well then so were you,"
"Nope,"
"At least I answered it,"
"Took you long enough,"
"If it was such a simple question, why didn't you talk?"
"Was it a simple question?" his reply knocks me off guard for a little bit. I don't know what he wants me to say.
"Maybe,"
I want to ask him where we stand, if he likes me enough to want to be with me like that. Do I even want him like that? Being with him or dating him was always kind of like a pipe dream, but everything's changed so fast. Hugging him, holding hands, little acts of flirtation have become a regular and mutual thing, but those are easy. They aren't restricting. To be fully with someone means devotion and loyalty. Not that they don't matter right now, but the whole aspect of dating confuses me.
"I said that we were friends, Kenma. Aren't we?"
"Yeah. You didn't say only or just," he finally caught on.
I nod. "Where are we?"
"McDonald's?"
"I mean where are we. In terms of...us?" I lock eyes with him and try not to cringe.
"Depends,"
"On what?"
"Do you like me?" Kenma breaks the gaze and looks at me with uncertainty.
"Yeah. Yeah, I do,"
"No, I mean like like me,"
I stand up and dump out the tray into a nearby trash can and motion for him to follow me. We go outside and I offer him a side of my earphones and my phone picks up a radio station.
"We went over this, didn't we?"
"So is that a yes?"
"What about you?"
"You first,"
It starts rain. Drizzling a little, then falling faster and heavier every second.
"We need to find a roof. And I am not going back to McDonald's like this,"
Kenma takes me by my hand and we run up a little street. There still isn't any shelter, and the rain broke the radio signal. There's nothing but static in my right ear. The alley is dimly lit, and at this point it's pouring.
"We're all wet anyway. There's no point in looking,"
"True, but what are we gonna do? Just stay like this?"
"Maybe,"
"You are out of your mind,"
"I know,"
