There's nothing worse than crows stalking you all day, resting on any perch they find. Waiting to bathe in the cold embrace of anything dark about to happen.
I stood still, staring at the crows on the branches outside. The old glass window made the sight more ghastly. The polished wooden frame of the window still looked shiny after all these years. A small cabin in the middle of nowhere. I was expecting a dusty fortress infested with plants and wildlife.
More crows joined the watch. Nothing positive came into mind. I only remembered that, a group of crows is called a murder.
The door opened, revealing Jude panting with excitement on his face.
"I found the mound." He announced with his arms wide open. His pushed back long hair was messier now.
"Really?" I asked, running my hand through my side fringe hair to make him aware of how his hair looked.
"Yeah. Let's go." He shoved me under his left arm and we walked out of the cabin.
The forest was silent. The sky was void of any cloud. The sun was already setting. I could hear the crushing of dead leaves in every step I took. This is definitely the right place to keep what we're looking for. I thought.
My name is Nevsen Morgan and I'm special for a dark reason. My mother was kidnapped and murdered by a man named Gadiel before I was a year old. I was born during her captivity. Gadiel and my parents belonged to a hidden organization called the Grey Caps. They are responsible for the investigation of unexplained occurrences and metaphysical activities, and also the protection of the world against it's threats.
Gadiel employed questionable principles and experiments in his operation as a Grey Cap. He was able to determine before my birth that, I am the reincarnation of one of the divine thirty six. This is a law believed in the book of Hebrews that; the world would never come to an end for the sake of thirty six holy persons present in it.
He conducted countless unknown experiments on me as a baby, until he was stopped by my father before it was too late. The scuffle in his laboratory resulted in an explosion that disintegrated him. But my father knows he will be back. In thirteen days, Gadiel will walk the earth again. It's now my personal vendetta to stop him permanently this time, all beginning with what we find in the mound.
We came up to the two feet high heap of soil. Shrubs grew around it in an eerie splendor.
My brother brought out his EMF detector from his pocket as we stood before the mound. He adjusted the antenna and switched it on. It gave out a loud never ending beep, indicating the presence of a high electromotive force.
We gasped in unison turning to look at each other. He switched it off.
"Do you think it's safe?" I said, whiles pacing backward slowly. I did not sense any Aura from the mound.
"Come on, It's just showing activity." He shrugged.
Crows started perching on the branches here too. I now realized I've not heard a single caw from any of the crows. They've made no sound since morning, just observing and waiting.
He picked up a stick and poked the mound inquisitively. It went right through it, scattering soil over the mound. He then poked the base of the mound. He felt something hard, down into the ground.
"Hold this." He handed me the EMF detector.
He knelt down and begun breaking down the mound, digging through the dirt with his bare hands.
I heard the flapping wings, more crows are flying in.
"Nev!" He called. "I think this is it."
He brushed his dirty hands in the soil, revealing a rusty ball the size of a watermelon. He lifted it up with ease.
"You think this is it?" He asked with doubt, shrugging backward.
"Yes it is." I answered.
He handed it over to me. I tossed his device back to him and inspected the ball.
I sensed a dark Aura around the ball. Then I noticed two lines of intangible inscriptions.
PQ SGPVCITCO
PQ GCTVJ"Hey! come take a look at this."
He rushed over and stood behind me. Craning his neck over my shoulders.
"I think it's a code or something." I informed him whiles fidgeting with the ball.
"Well, that's what you're special for." He said. "So figure it out."
He was right, that's what I'm special for. I can sense Auras of anything that has conscience. I am able to figure out codes quickly without spending days thinking about it.
I gave the ball back to him. I squatted and used the stick to write the coded inscriptions on the ground. I started rearranging the letters in my head to form anything meaningful. The inscriptions lacked enough vowels, so nothing meaningful could be formed. I changed the pattern of rearranging the letters but nothing significant was formed.
Jude paced back and front moving away from me, while looking at me rack my brain.
The fact that each line started with PQ, signified that emphasis were being laid on it. It could be a warning, I thought. I concentrate on that.
I had something tangible when I used the Ceasar's cipher to decode the message. It is an old cipher used by ancient Romans to encode messages and warnings by replacing the original alphabets in the message with the second or third alphabet before or after the original alphabet. PQ became NO when I replaced PQ with the second alphabet before each letter.
Jude's phone rang immediately and it broke my concentration. He placed the ball on the ground and answered his call whiles the EMF detector was in his other hand.
I closed my eyes and visualized the inscriptions, decoding each letter in my mind. My heart beat accelerated as I suddenly realized the our mistake.
It warning message was;NO PENTAGRAM
NO EARTH"Jude!" I yelled racing up to him. "Lift it off the ground!"
He was startled. He quickly reached out his hand to touch it and with the same energy he retracted his hand with pain. The ball was red hot.
Then it gave out a loud crack. We stood still, paralyzed with fright.
A thick dark smoke poured out of the crack slowly accompanied by subtle rattle sounds. Then an orb floated out of the ball, glowing faintly. It flew around above us slowly, while the thick dark smoke followed it in a snaky wave. It was like a dark smoke serpent with the head of a glowing orb.
The crows started cawing violently, letting out cries and flying around in a chaotic manner.
The dark smoke spiralled above and flew upward into the sky with the crows cawing after it.
Jude screamed and cursed. He struck his fist onto the ground as he screamed more.
I could not move I stared at the sky immersed in fear and shock. Fear of the darkness we've carelessly released into the world. It could be everywhere buh nowhere.
