Chapter 25

"Hala, kilala mo ba iyon, Kaye?"

Umiling agad ako at inayos ang tali ng ponytail. I gestured them to follow me in the operating room.

Kitang kita ko sa gilid ng aking mata kung paano niya ako pinasadahan ng tingin mula ulo hanggang paa. Umirap nalang ako at bumuntong hininga.

"Let's start."I said.

It was difficult case that's why it took 3 hours of operating. I smiled when the doctors, nurses and other visiting doctors congratulate me for the successful operation.

"Doc Velasco, papicture mamaya, ah?"biro ng isang nurse nang makalabas kami sa operating room.

I laughed and tapped his shoulder. His companion laughed, too, that made me smile.

"Doctor Velasco!"maligayang tawag ni Doctor Salvador.

I turned my back from the nurses only to face Doctor Salvador with the visiting nurses behind him. Including him.

Well, I am still guilty for the lies but I don't want him to notice. Mukhang nakamove-on na din naman siya kaya walang problema.

"Doc,"I called and smiled to all of the doctors, including the nurses.

"This is Doctor Kaye Maureen Velasco, Doctor Navarro. Doctor Velasco, this is Doctor Alfred Ace Navarro, the head surgeon doctor of one of the popular hospital in America."pakilala ni Doc Salvador na nakangiti.

I almost choke when he handed me his hand. Tinignan ko iyon.

Oh, so you want us to be strangers, huh? Okay, I guess you don't want others to know what's going on between us 5 years ago.

Ngumiti ako at tinanggap iyon na parang nagagalak akong makita siya ulit. No, I'd rather want him gone than we're on the same room because what I did to him made my guilt resurface again.

Binitiwan ko din agad iyon at ngumiti sa mga doctor na nasa likod niya. He was staring without emotion at me when my eyes darted at him.

"Isn't she the best? Siya lang ang makakapagbuhay muli ng pasyente sa loob ng tatlong oras."Doctor Salvador was confident.

Alam kong gusto niya lang akong ipagmalaki pero hindi ko gusto iyon. Pakiramdam ko ay ako lang ang nakikita niyang magaling sa lahat ng doktor dito kaya ayaw kong ipinagmamalaki ako.

I just did my job as a doctor. And that includes that we should do our best to save the people who is in need. No need to burst out the job that doctors do.

Tumingin ako kay Ace na malamig ang tingin sa akin. Tumikhim ako at yumuko upang hindi niya makita ang pangungutya sa aking mata.

Nagpaalam muna ako para puntahan sila Doc Kian at Nurse Akisha sa office ko. Nakangiti sila sa akin nang pumasok ako doon kaya tinaasan ko sila ng kilay.

Like I always do. Sanay naman na sila.

"You two are creeping me out. Don't smile at me like that, please."I said and went to my chair.

Umupo ako at hinilot ang sintido. The work stressed me out today, plus Ace's presence. Napabuntong hininga ulit ako at nilagay ang ulo sa headboard ng upuan.

"Congrats, doc! Congrats!"Kian congratulate with a clap and it made me roll my eyes.

Nurse Akisha suddenly hit the paper nearby on Kian's head. Napatawa nalang ako at hinubad ang stethoscope.

As Akisha promised earlier, we had treated streetfoods from the side of the road for free.

"Oh, ketchup."ani Kian kay Akisha at binigay ang bote ng ketchup.
