“Kenzie look! The new neighbors are moving in!” I looked up from my bright phone screen, and stared at my brother who was a tad too excited about this situation.
“Brian, why are you so excited about this?”
“Because they might have somebody my age! I will finally have somebody to play with!”
“Yea and that would be awesome so you don’t have to keep pestering us to play with you.” My sister smirked thumping down the stairs, joining in our conversation. I chuckled under my breath at her comment since it was true; it would be a relief to the both of us.
“So, Brian, what if it’s a girl? Then what will you do?” I asked, setting my phone down on the side table, standing up from my position on the couch, stretching my arms and back out. I watched my brother, he tilted his head to the side, and made a little pouty face that showed he was thinking, he raised his arm and opened his mouth to speak but quickly closed it.
My sister and I laughed at his no response, “That’s what we thought ya doof”. He stuck his tongue out at us and picked his hand up as to give us the middle finger, but put up his pointer finger instead since he can’t do the actual middle finger.
“Mackenzie and Dakota, stop bullying you brother.” My mother sternly warned us as she she walked through living room into the kitchen. We both opened our mouths about to protest, but mother beat us to it, “I don’t want to hear it.” turning around, pointing her finger at us.
“Ugh stupid bitch, always taking the little shit’s side and not ours.” muttering under her breath, Kota dramatically plopped down on the couch, pulling her phone out. I looked at her because of her poor choice of words, she started squirming under my stare but ignored me. Rolling my eyes, I turned on my heels and followed mother into the kitchen pushing through the door that separated the two rooms.
“Mom, can we go-“
“Kenzie, I want you and your siblings to go over and introduce yourselves to the neighbors.” She interrupted me, staring out the window, watching the neighbors moving in.
I lumbered over to where she was standing and looked out the window, there is a woman with blonde hair, she looks to be about mid 40’s and is wearing the typical soccer mom outfit. My eyes moved to the moving truck since there was some movement over there, and there stood a tall man, probably around the same age as the woman, he had a little beer gut forming and looked to be going bald. My eyes scanned around their yard and anywhere else, but I didn’t see any kids running around or anybody mine or my sister’s age.
Damn I actually was hoping for somebody my age or Kota’s age, it would be much different since all there is around here is old people or newborns.
I slowly turned to my mom, who was now occupied with cleaning our freshly picked tomatoes and potatoes from her little garden that she is obsessed with. I watched her for a couple seconds, her hands gracefully washing, I would screw that up somehow, and I took in her appearance. She had some grey hairs coming in, she probably already knows that, she’s looking a little thinner then from the last time I’ve actually took in her appearance, and she’s wearing her favorite pajamas- my dad’s boxers that he doesn’t wear anymore and my dad’s white t shirt.
“Okay mom, we will go over and introduce ourselves.” I announced, taking her out of her thoughts. She turned and smiled at me, “Thank you honey”. I smiled back at her and turned to leave the kitchen, to see if Brian wants to go play soccer.
I mean, there’s no kids so why not introduce ourselves? It’s just an old married couple who will get annoyed with our soccer balls ending up in their yards every day anyway so better get on good terms now.
Pushing through the door that separated the kitchen and living room, I was looking for Brian to see if he wanted to play soccer outside with me. Walking into the room, Kota is spread out across the couch, hogging the tv but Brian was no where in sight.
“Yo Kody, where is Brian?” she turned from the tv to look at me and shrugged her shoulders, turning back to Real Life: Skeletons.
Muttering under my breath, “Thanks for the help Kody”.
Maybe he is upstairs playing Xbox.
Dragging my feet over to the steps, placing my hand on the railing I started skipping up the steps.
“Wait Kenz,” Kota called out, I stopped in my tracks, turning around to face her from the middle of the stair case. Staring at her to carry on, nodding my head, pointing the remote at the tv, she paused her show and fully turned around to face me.
“Are you hoping for kids next door?” I looked at her and she continued “Like kids our age.” I nodded my head yes. “I’m really hoping for a guy, my age. You know so we can become friends and then of course become more. Then, we could always be together and just show up because we live right next door. It’s like a typical love story that everybody wants.” she announced, looking off into the distance, probably daydreaming scenarios.
“Kota, what if ya’ll break up huh? Then what? It’d be awkward for the entire neighborhood. I would never date a neighbor, it would be too awkward in the end.” I smirked, she looked up and gave me the finger, chuckling I continued up the stairs into Brian’s room.
