After a really long talk, a really really long one with Sehui, Jena decides to turn the phone in anyways. Yeoreum had wronged so many, too many, people and she needs and will pay for it. So that brings us to this moment, Jena and Sehui exiting the principal's office, after sitting there for almost half an hour, confessing and turning the evidence in. "I— I will take measures, Ms. Shin and Ms. Seo." The principal had said, all of the revelation too much for him, "You better should, Mr. Yang." Sehui closed the office's door. "Now what?" Jena looks over to her friend, "We wait."
It has been over two weeks ever since the lake incident and the whole school still thinks that Jena did it, pushing Yeoreum into the waters. Some of them didn't do anything and just gossip behind her back, while some, let's just say that Jena needs to rewrite what she rewrote all over again. As what she had predicted, there was no progress on her relationship with Yunho, none of them bringing their relationship status to the surface. Yeoreum was still the same, with all her threats and glares, the stupid yet sly girl who didn't even thought about making a back up file was furious.
"I guess I should really leave it to the higher ups then."
And so she did.
A few days later, in the middle of class, some police officers disrupted it, looking for, yes You guessed it, the infamous Lee Yeoreum. The students were surprised, especially when they announced what she was getting detained for. Assault. Slander. Abuse. Attempted murder. And the list goes on. The court contacted the victims and their family, asking them to be witnesses, including the Shin family. So there they are, in a beautiful Wednesday morning, the siblings sitting in one of Seoul's court room, waiting for the hearing instead of going to school. Even the boys had insisted on going and skipping school, now they are patiently sitting at the back, keeping their manners well instead of screaming and yelling.
The hearing started, and Yeoreum was brought out, "Needless to say, the uniform surely does look fitting on her." Jane had befriended one of the victim's sibling, that very girl whispered the following sentence. Soon after, the judges came out, and as usual, the people inside the courtroom stood and gave their respect, which was soon dismissed. "Wednesday, May 6 2020, 10.37 A.M. We will start Lee Yeoreum's trial." The witnesses were called out to the witness box one by one, taking their oath and testifying, of course, the things coming out of their mouth useful against Yeoreum, even her family's trusted lawyer was in the verge of giving up.
"Can witness Shin Jena, come out please."
Jena was saved for the last, as she was the one who turned her in. After saying her oath, Jena took a seat and the questions started. "Could you tell us how you know Ms. Lee here?" Jena glances briefly towards the accused and nods, she then proceeded to tell them their first meeting, during middle school. "And when was the first time Ms. Lee abused you?" The questions pours in, varying on what she did, how she did it, why she did it, and who else did it, "For the last question, Ms. Shin, we admire you for your courage, but why now?" The dude who had been questioning her asks. Jena paused for a moment, and smiles slightly.
"I was afraid, that is." Jena starts, "Ms. Lee took a big part of me, she damaged, tarnished, and killed it, so I was afraid of her, very much." Jena glances at Yeoreum once again, "I thought that I would never be able to escape this hellhole, even when she got suspended, I still felt that I couldn't escape from her palms, and in the end will get crushed all over again." Jena pauses, "But I regained my courage from the people around me." She looks back slightly, catching her family's stare, Sehui's, the boys', and, Yunho's, the boy giving her a reassuring nod. "I learnt that even though Ms. Lee left a big scar on me, I am way more than that, I'm tough, stronger, and especially, I am protected. So I try to overcome it, and here we are now." The dude whose name Jena doesn't know gave her a small smile, satisfied with her answer. "Thank your for your cooperation, Ms. Shin. You may return now."
Jena stood up, making eye contact with a furious Yeoreum who's slowly losing her mind. "I will destroy you." Yeoreum mumbles, keeping her glare on Jena, the latter brushing it off, trying to keep her breath steady and stable. "Lee Yeoreum will serve three years in juvenile prison." The judge announced their judgement and the hearing ended. Jena couldn't believe it, it ended, all of it ended, all that years of suffocation, ended in just half an hour. After Yeoreum got dragged away, Jena's knees couldn't help it but buckle, she fell down on the tiled floor, "Sweetheart, are you okay?" Mr. Shin jogs up to her, grabbing Jena's shoulders.
Jena looks down, and nods, "It's over, finally it's over." She looks up at the concerned faces of her family and friends, and couldn't help but let a tear slip out, "Am I free now?" Mr. Shin engulfed her in a hug, followed by her mom, and then her siblings, then Sehui followed, "Yes sweetheart, you're free." The dam broke loose and she cries, this time, in relief and pure happiness instead of fear and panic. "You did wonderful honey." Mrs. Shin wipes the falling tears and kisses her cheeks, letting out a few tears herself.
After their wholesome sob session was over, partially due to the workers telling them the next hearing will take place, the group decided to get some food. "Your Dad needs to go back to work and I have a meeting," Mrs. Shin held her daughter's hand, handing her a card, "So get you and your friends something nice to eat, okay honey?" The woman caresses Jena's hair lovingly, then left her with a kiss on her forehead. "Shall we?" Jane threw her hand over Jena's shoulders, "We should get McDonal—" "Finish that sentence and I'll burn your room down." Jena threatens, "We're eating beef." Needless to say, that day would be the happiest day for Jena.
