Felix's P.O.V

Freedom. That's all I felt as I continued to run last the many houses and closer to the outskirts of my futuristic and boring town.

I already ran- well, more like sprinted- a good amount of land. And, usually I would be exhausted with such extreme running, my lungs and legs wanting to give out with the intensity of the workout; just like all of those times in P.E. class. But, I wasn't the least bit of tired, and I knew exactly why.

This was different from all those times I ran in school. I was running with a purpose this time. My mind was filled with the painful words of everyone who ever doubted and teased me for my dreams; along with that eye-owning dream that refused to stop replaying and showing me my terrible future.

"Prove them all wrong!" My subconscious screamed at me, which blocked out the wind that blew past my ears. "Make them eat all of their words! Do it!"

And, that was my fuel, my motivation to keep running towards my dream... which was the trashy part of our town...literally.

*Time-skip*

Soon enough, my sprinting slowed down to a half run due to my body finally being hit with the hard exercise I just did. But, it didn't matter since I already arrived at my destination. And, I knew this because the odor of trash and dirt that rose off the barren land in heat waves drafted into my nose, assuring me that I was now in 'The Gulp'.Everyone knew about this part of town, and everyone called it 'The Gulp' because every piece of trash that has ever existed after the change of government came here, where it met that fate of being burned and turned into mountainous piles of ash.

But, despite the constant burning s of the garbage, there were still tons and tons of trash and unwanted junk bunched together in skyscraper height piles. I used to despise it for being so unsanitary and harmful for the once grassy and lively meadows that once littered this part of the area, but now, I'm grateful because it's the only way that I can get my hands onto old pieces of metal and unwanted parts that'll help me reach my ever-so-close dream.

I bit my lip and slowly walked off the main road and towards a few of the piles, frowning as the stench of garbage and burnt metal got stronger as I stepped closer to them. But, I dismissed the wretched odor and quickly dug around in my satchel for a pair of gloves. After finding a pair, I slipped them onto my hands and slowly began sifting through what I could reach. I was disgusted and appalled by what I found, thankful that I actually used my head for once and brought a pair of gloves.

Piece after piece, my hands found nothing but slimy substances that I believe was once food, mud and dirt, chipped off pieces of wood and burnt metal, and unbelievably large insects that infested each and every item that I touched, leading me to go to a new pile, but only to repeat the same process.I searched for hours, but I couldn't find anything that would help me in the slightest no matter how deep I went into the pile of garbage. My hopes were dead as I sat on the main road, looking up at the piles as I slowly slipped my gloves off and tossed them into a nearby dirt pile.

At this rate and with these results that I received today, my plans will not be going anywhere or progressing in the slightest, and the thought of it made my insides ache with disappointment. Maybe this IS pointless...maybe my parents were right. This was a foolish wish of mine. I should just stick to something practical, even if it means that I'll never be happy.

I sighed softly and rinsed my hands off with a water bottle I brought before digging out a snack that I also brought. My soft munches was the only thing I heard besides the wind and the faraway noise of machines. And, the quietness and strange calmness to this area made me slip and lose myself within my thoughts, forgetting about everything else for a while.

I didn't hear the footsteps that came towards me and the sound of a male's voice. "Uhm...dude?" The voice spoke, causing me to jump out of my skin and almost scream with fright.

I panted softly and pouted as I placed a hand over my beating heart, and tried to steady my rapid breathing. I looked up to see the one responsible for scaring me, my gaze meeting the dirtied face of a man probably the same age as I. He had a beard, and he had dark brown, messy hair along with deep brown eyes that peered down upon me with confusion. "What are you doing here?" He questioned, and I picked up the country accent that I missed earlier when he first spoke.

"I-I, uh..." I stuttered, nervousness beginning to bubble within me for me no good reason. Damn my terrible people skills.

"You're not in trouble or anything." He clarified with a crooked smile. "I'm just wondering why a person who doesn't look crazy would dare to come down here. Y'know, since everyone is afraid of this place." He gave a light chuckle and I smiled nervously up at him.

"I, heh, I just came here to look for some stuff." I spoke quickly as my eyes darted around everywhere, afraid to meet the strong gaze of the man in front of me. "May I ask what you're looking for and why?" He asked as he grabbed a rag that hung from the worn belt tied around his waist and cleaned off his face. I slowly looked up at his now clear face and was surprised at how friendly and genuinely curious he seemed in comparison to the other snotty and stuck-up people back in town who cared about no one but themselves. I shook my head softly and gave a small, forced laugh. "I'm just looking for some old pieces of metal and stuff, anything to help me out since I'm building a..." I coughed awkwardly. "A doghouse for my...dog." I lied.

I wanted to tell him the truth, believe me, I did. But, I don't want to be banned from here, and I don't want another person to laugh at my face and tell me that I couldn't do it, because I already learned that today. I didn't need another person to constantly make fun of me for my wish. That was all the kids I went to school with and my parents' job already.

"But," I gave a small sigh. "I couldn't find anything, so I'm just going to go home now." I said as I stood from the ground, grabbing my satchel and turning to face the man who was a bit taller than I was. He frowned at my tone of voice and shook his head. "Friend, hold on." He began. "I know for damn sure that no one comes out here to get stuff to build a freaking doghouse, but whatever, I'm not here to judge you or tell you what to do and what not to do. I can tell that you're looking for things to build something that means a lot to you, because no one in their right mind would ever come down here. No offense." He gave another chuckle and I shook my head, laughing softly.

"So, dude, if this thing means that much to you, you shouldn't give up so easily. I know it may seem hopeless, but it's not, trust me. If you just keep digging and keep this determination that you have within you, all that hard work is going to pay off. And, hey, I'll even help you." He smiled, showing off white teeth in perfect rows. I couldn't help but to smile back. "You really think so?" I asked, and he nodded in response."I know so." He said as he lazily threw an arm around my shoulders. "But, it's getting late. You should go home and rest, so that when tomorrow rolls around, you can come back with a clearer mind and I'll help ya."

I nodded and gave another smile. "I will. Thanks so much for your kind words and your generosity, uh..." I trailed off and the man chuckled and outstretched his hand. "Ken. And, you?"

"Felix." I said and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you, Felix." Ken bowed his head slightly and released my hand. "Now, go home and rest, little guy." He said as he ruffled my hair. I laughed and swatted his hands away. "I am not little." I protested, receiving a smile and a playful roll of the eyes.

"Yeah, yeah. Now go home." Ken laughed. "Alright then, bye!" I smiled for a final time before beginning to slowly jog away from his waving figure and towards the town that I called home, my heart and mind going crazy with happiness due to the fact that I finally found someone who didn't discourage me, and was actually willing to help me.

Maybe all hope isn't lost....
