Three weeks has passed since I first started working at N.E.S.T for Mirage and in these weeks I learned quite a lot. For example, working with weapons, how to take care of them and even some combat moves. Although, I am not really that good. Mirage is patient but strict. He does have his soft moments when he's less formal like I have seen before but most of the time, 90% of the day he's strict. It became more after the third day. Sometimes I felt more like a bother then an actual help and really tried to show him I am trying my best. It's just hard sometimes.
Mirage looked up as I came in and greeted him. "Hi..." he returned the 'hi' and a weak smile. "You're late..." he said, looking at the clock. "Five minutes..." I said quietly, looking back at him. "Yeah... that's still five minutes," he said. I sighed, "sorry..." I muttered and grabbed some files. Mr. Pierce was yelling at me not too long ago and hit me. I was pretty upset about it and because of that I missed the bus. Although, I can not tell Mirage about it. I want to keep my private life and work seperated.
Work is the only place for me to fully concentrate on something I really liked to do and not think about getting hit, wiped, bullied and yelled at all the time. I am just scared because two days ago, I heard Mr. Pierce complained about me to his wife that no one wants an adult. I turned eighteen which meant that I am an adult for the law. No one is going to pay for me and that really hurt. They had an orphan house to earn money with us...
I brushed it off and focussed on my work. "Why are you late?" Mirage asked after ten minutes. "I missed the bus..." I sulked. "Why did you miss the bus?" he pushed. "I had an argument with someone... it upset me and that's why I missed the bus," I sulked. He looked up from his work. "It's hard to imagine you having a heated argument with someone..." he said.
"Why?" I mocked, a little annoyed. He obviously noticed it and stared at me. "Because you're so shy," he finally replied. I hated it if people reminded me of it, but he's also my boss so I swallowed my come back and mustered a smile on my face. "Okay, well... everyone can have arguments sometimes... and I am not always shy. Just around new people..." I sulked. "We've known each other for three weeks now," he pointed out. I am not in the mood to argue with him right now. "Yeah, well... I am getting less shy. I am just not used to big crowds," I said and focussed back on my work, hoping he wouldn't ask anything else. I could hear him sigh but luckily didn't ask me further.
I wasn't sure about leaving the office during break time. I have seen that soldier more than twice and everytime he spooked me. I started to read books, trying to figure out more. I have always been sensitive but never experienced anything like this. Mirage was a little suspicious and didn't believe the spider story anymore, but what can I tell him? I am seeing ghosts?
I snorted at the thought and shook my head. Why me? As if my life isn't hard enough...
Perhaps there's only one solution, figuring out who he is. Everytime I see him, he's just staring at me and sometimes he gives me visions. I hear strange noises and see things. It doesn't occur everytime I see him, but enough to tire me out and annoy me.I got up and strode over to the archive, trying to find something. I checked a couple of racks, but couldn't find anything. I don't even know what I am looking for. All I know is that this soldier is indeed involved with the plane crash of a couple of months ago. I just needed to find out what he was trying to tell me and why, "What are you doing here?"
I turned around, facing Mirage who pierced his eyes straight through mine. I had no words while he crossed his arms, demanding an answer. Perhaps I should tell him the truth, I just feel like a total idiot right now. "I am looking for something..." I said honestly. "Which is?" he asked, giving me a look. He's never going to believe me..."Files of the plane crash...."
"They are not stored here... why are you looking for it? Why is this so important to you?" he asked, his voice hard. He leaned against the edge of a metal table and stared at me. "It's not important... I am just curious about it," I said slowly. "You know.... you make me really suspicious... how can I trust you?" he asked. "I don't know how to explain myself either..." I said eventually.
"First day I came here... when you asked why I looked like I just saw a ghost is because I did see something. I feel stupid for even mentioning this because I don't understand it either... there's this man... black hair and he has a scar across his face. He's missing his right eye and totally covered in blood. He had brown eyes and around 6'1 ft tall... wearing a uniform... his arm is burned. The skin is peeling off like he was one fire... and his leg was deep flesh wound. I can see the bone... he was on board of that plane that crashed and he's not leaving me alone..."
I saw him thinking, "Never mind... I am losing my mind," I sighed and waved it off before turning around. "I believe you.... we haven't told anyone about the accident and you knew..." he said. I turned around again to face him. "You should've told me this sooner..." he added sternly. "I sound like an idiot and I didn't want to make the fool out of myself," I mocked. He shook his head and passed me, "come with me, Skylar,"
