The door creaked as Charlie entered his flat in the light of the mid-afternoon of late March Brighton. The weekend in Bath had been amazing. Jack did announce so as they were on their way but he couldn't predict that a certain head of curl would make his way to cheer up their lonely friend without hesitation.
Things weren't perfect, of course not. But he was with Isaac, they talked some things out, with some left on the to-do list. They really talked. They both learned about each other, in ways they didn't even think about before. Learned about the reasons of their actions. Sure, those actions and most of their troubles could have actually been avoided if they weren't such dumbasses, incapable of really communicating correctly. But they were learning about that too, and it was a good thing.
After a night of reconciliation and a morning of meeting Charlie's friends, Isaac stayed with the group all Saturday, before deciding to head back with Charlie. His boyfriend? That's what Charlie thought, but they didn't talk about that specifically. Maybe later. Charlie had asked, if his parents wouldn't be worried, and Isaac told him not to worry. To which Charlie rightfully pointed out that, duh, "because you don't live with them anymore". The answer surprised him, actually. Even if he didn't think he could be more surprised after this weekend. Oh my sweet boy, if only you knew. Isaac hinted, not even vaguely, that he was back at his parent's house, at least for a bit. Charlie didn't ask. Not now, not on the train within earshot of his friends.
Now, they were back at Charlie's place, bags on their shoulder. Almost immediately, a blond head popped out of the kitchen frame. Evie welcomed them with a large smile. She already knew, of course. Charlie loved his friends, but he had felt the need to tell Evie through some messages. And now, although she had obviously already met him before, she had insisted on a formal meeting. Maybe to tell him that if he dared hurt her boy again, he would taste her fists. Which we all know by now would be an actual threat coming from her. But so far, she had just seemed really excited and happy for her housemate.
"Welcome, welcome!" she said enthusiastically as Winnie's head appeared behind hers. Evie walked towards them, her sister staying behind. She hugged Charlie, and then Isaac, after exchanging a look. "How was this weekend?"
"I would be lying if I said anything but great," Charlie said with a smile and a shrug.
"I'm glad to hear it. Dinner's almost ready, I hope you're hungry. Be well-behaved in the meantime."
Evie winked at them, which made Charlie roll his eyes. To which she ruffled his hair, making him blush like a kid embarrassed by their mum. She went back to the kitchen, giving Isaac a look that, according to Charlie, could only mean "be careful". About that short amount of time where they should behave well or in general? He didn't know. But it reminded him that Isaac and Evie had an encounter other than the party and that morning on the Sunday following their first kiss. When he came to put the stars on the ceiling in Charlie's room. She said he had been "pretty convincing" and he believed that, but what did he say exactly? What did she say? Because he knew she would have argued back, or given some conditions. He was a little too afraid to ask at this point.
They headed to his room, where Charlie started unpacking his bag while Isaac was trying to find an appropriate song for the moment.
