7. The Brighter Side
The next day had been nothing like Jade expected it to be.
She came home from shopping at twelve and she changed into the new outfit that she bought from the shopping centre. It was a pair of light blue skinny jeans and a white off-the-shoulder t-shirt. She braided her hair going down her left shoulder and slipped on some old Converse pumps.
She smiled at her reflection in the mirror, something she doesn’t often do.
At five to one, she knocked on Aaron’s door. There were footsteps running down the stairs and the door opened revealing a very excited looking Carolynn.
“Hey Jade! Oh, you look nice. I wanted a top like that when I went shopping last week but I couldn’t find one, it suits you. Did you get those jeans from Topshop? I so wanted one! And your hairstyle is just so -”
Jade let Carolynn finish babbling before she said, “Thanks, you look great too.” She did. With her floral playsuit and her hair down with a braid going over the top like a hair band. “Where’s...um, Aaron?”
“He’s in the shower; he’ll be out in a bit. Come and check out my room, Jade. Oh and you’ve totally got to see my new posters!” Carolynn exclaimed. Jade let her lead her up the stairs and into her room.
It was big. Maybe not massive but bigger than her own room, anyway.
There was a single bed at the end of the room, where the window was, a large wardrobe with mirror on its exterior doors, a computer table across from the bed and a dressing table next to the wardrobe. The walls were painted an orangey-yellow, like the sunset. On the walls, there were lots of posters.
Posters of boys, singers, films, characters, friends and animals. They were just...all over the place. It gave the room a teenage atmosphere and it felt like she was in Maddie’s room, but this one felt more welcoming and warm.
“D’you like this one? It’s my newest obsession,” Carolynn said pointing to a poster of a boy, “James Gregan! He is a star! Want to listen to one of his songs?”
Jade sat on Carolynn’s bed listening to a song by James Gregan and flicking through a magazine. Carolynn was chatting away about – well – everything and anything.
Just then the door opened and Aaron was there with a white t shirt that stuck on his damp body and his hair that was still dripping wet.
“Oh, Jade. I didn’t know you were here. Carolynn, you should have told me.”
“Not my fault. You were in the shower,” Carolynn replied back defensively.
“Well, come on then Jade. You’re probably bored in here,” Aaron said.
“Oh...uh...I’m not bored, but yeah,” Jade stood up and walked over to Aaron, “bye Carolynn, I’ll see you in a bit.”
