Chapter Three

Open for business

Max goes to the kitchen and Sam is helping prepare lunch, Anne is still outside playing with Evan and one of the soldiers, so he goes in search of his mother. He walks the grounds around the house and finds her sitting beneath a huge oak tree reading a book, she is engrossed in a book entitled " Cellular mutation and gene manipulation". Max takes a seat beside her and sits quietly For a few minutes until she notices him and sets her book down.

"That's a big book, who would write a book like that?" Max asks.

"I did."

"Really?"

"Yea, I had lots of time before you were born," she teases.

"Gee thanks."

"It's not that, a baby takes a lot of time away from hobbies and stuff."

"Gene mutation is your hobby?"

"I know, I'm a freak."

"No you're not, but I would like to ask you a question."

"Sure anything."

"What happened when Genetech shut down?"

Jen is surprised by the maturity of his questions lately, he has shown that he really plans to take charge of his destiny and help others like him through the difficult times. Although she was expecting a question about sex or something related, she gave a great speech yesterday, and he is a teenager after all.

"When Genetech was shut down, the military realized what a great weapon time travel could be, now that they knew time travel was even possible. They secretly set up the key people involved in a lab and squirreled away the potential prospects in an adoption agency. They had thought that I would be there breakthrough but they didn't plan on my refusal even when my own child was taken away from me. I would never let them use my gift as a weapon, I knew how dangerous it could be, even catastrophic. My plan now though is to help those across the planet who are suffering from the same problem, I plan to bring them back to the farm and educate them on how to survive until the day that they can control their gifts. Mrs. Wallace is the administrator of this new agency and she will act as the strong arm tracking down Joe, and the Corbins, until they are brought to justice. They pose a threat to the entire project and everyone involved, but I could care less about them, I want that drug they used on me it could save anyone with this mutation."

"It's scary the lengths the government will go to get what they want," Max says.

"You have no idea."

Mother and son sit for the next hour discussing all the things that have been hidden away for way too long, they grow closer during this short time and Max feels closer to her than ever. Jen finally comes out of her shell and discovers her motherly instincts, she has felt uncomfortable around her own son since their reunion and she has been worried that she had lost him.

As they sit talking together under the oak tree the sound of helicopters can be heard faint off in the distance, soon three black dots against a bright blue sky can be seen and they are heading straight their way. When the aircraft gets closer Max and his mother can tell that one is a transport and the other two are attack helicopters decked out with guns and missiles. The two attack helicopters hover in a defensive stance while the transport lands and it's occupants disembark, a soldier gets out with a young teenage boy and delivers him to Mrs. Wallace and Sam who have gone out to greet him. Jen and Max both stand up and make their way back to the house so that they can also greet the new recruit from Iran named Saif.
