You'll Break Me

Somehow

we found ourselves cramped in a seat

during that endless bus ride to the band show.

Somehow

we ended up pressed close together

my music in both our ears

and books open in our laps.

We both like science fiction

and heavy metal and reading

and camping

and neither of us can stand country songs.

We tease each other and laugh

because my music is weird

and we're both socially awkward

And somehow

on the drive back home

when darkness falls and the bus quiets down

and exhaustion settles over us

you lean your head on my shoulder and sleep

the only thing between us, my box of Cheese- Its.

And my icy heart thaws, warming pleasantly

because I haven't felt like this in some time.

Our love blossoms and grows,

like delicate flowers springing up

after a harsh, frigid winter

and it's the most refreshing thing I've seen in a while.

And I can't help but cringe and squirm

because I know you will lead me on

shower a lonely heart with promises

and I'll take it all in, blinded by my feelings

just like last time.

And then you will turn away

for one reason or another

you'll break me.

We're young

there's no way this will last.

I should close up

just me and my notebooks and a blade or two

we can get by.

I can't afford for someone else to damage me.

But you're a blissful oasis

in the barren desert of my life.

I know by now

the light at the end of the tunnel

is the headlight of an oncoming train

but I can't pull myself away

why don't

I
