When Zoe woke up the next day, she thought of a few things to help Paul. She finds her photo album with the many pictures of her and Paul before the accident. She goes downstairs and finds him sitting on the couch. "How'd you sleep last night?" Asked Zoe. "Terrible. I'm worried that I'll never find my Zoe! What if she's dead?!" Asked Paul as his voice cracked.
Instead of pressuring Paul into knowing her, Zoe decided to play along. "When did you see her last?" She asked. "I don't remember. I've been in a coma for a month, and I can't remember anything!" Paul cried. "You remembered where you live, at least." Zoe said as she rubbed her boyfriend's back. "That's true. But I'm living with a complete stranger, not my girlfriend!" Said Paul. "I'm your... never mind." Said Zoe as she stopped herself.
Paul lets out a heavy sigh. "Do you remember where you last saw my Zoe?" He asked. "I may be able to help you with that." Zoe said. "How?" Paul asked. Zoe picks up the photo album and opens it. She shows Paul the many pictures of the two of them together. "See that girl in the blue dress?" Asked Zoe. "Is that Zoe?" Asked Paul. "Yeah. Now look at me. Do you see the resemblance." Zoe asked. Paul looks at her and studies her face. "Wait a minute! In this picture, Zoe's wearing her hair down. Your hair is in a... um... help me out." Paul said.
Zoe sighs heavily. "It's called a ponytail." She said. "A ponytail, of course! I must say, you look a lot like Zoe! Does she have a twin sister?" Asked Paul. "No, she doesn't have a twin sister! Zoe's an only child! Her parents died a month before the accident!" Yelled Zoe. "Whoa, there's no need to raise your voice! I was just curious." Paul said. "I'm sorry, Paul. I'm just really frustrated right now." Zoe said as she buried her face into her hands.
Paul's eyes widen. "You know my name?! How can you know who I am if we've never met?!" He asked in shock. Zoe clutches onto his shoulders. "We've met in 1961 at the cavern! That same year is when we became boyfriend and girlfriend! Our relationship has been going on for five years, and still counting! Please, Paul, you have to know who I am! I'm Zoe, your girlfriend! Please, remember me!! How can you not recognize your own girlfriend?! It's me, Paul!!!" She yelled.
"I do apologize, but you're not Zoe. She never raises her voice at me, nor does she wear her hair in a ponytail." Said Paul. "You've seen me wear my hair up before!" Said Zoe. "I hate to disagree with you, but no I haven't. In fact, I still don't know who you are, and why you claim to be Zoe." Paul said. "Wait a minute! What about that song you used to sing for me whenever I was scared?" Zoe asked. Paul raises his eyebrow. "Come again?" He asked.
Zoe walks over to the piano and sits down. She starts tickling the ivories to play the song she remembers.
Once, there was a way to get back homeward
Once, there was a way to get back home
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullabyGolden slumbers fill your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullabyOnce, there was a way to get back homeward
Once, there was a way to get back home
Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry
And I will sing a lullabyAfter Zoe finished playing, Paul had tears in his eyes. "What's wrong, hon?" Asked Zoe. "That's such a beautiful song! Did you write it yourself?" Asked Paul. "I didn't write it, Paul. You did!" Zoe said. "I did?" Paul asked. Zoe walks to the dining room table, sits down, and puts her head down on the table. Paul walks over to her and rubs her back. "I can't believe you don't remember your own song." Said Zoe. "Hey, I never said I didn't like the song. I just don't remember it." Said Paul.
Zoe thrusts herself off her chair and clutches Paul by his shoulders. She squeezes him with a tight grip. "Listen to me! You're 24 years old, you're in a band called The Beatles, you've written a lot of songs, and you've been a singer ever since you were a teenager!!" Zoe yelled. "Stop it, you're hurting me!" Paul said as he was on the verge of tears. "I'm not finished! We had so many good times together, and you're still telling me you don't remember your own girlfriend!! Paul, that really hurts!" Said Zoe as her voice cracked. "Let me go!" Cried Paul. "If you can't accept the fact that your girlfriend is standing right here, never talk to me again!" Zoe said as she cried. "What?" Paul said sadly.
Zoe pushes Paul onto the couch and runs up to her room, crying her eyes out. "Some boyfriend! I'm trying to help him, but he's still acting like he doesn't know his own girlfriend!" She huffed. Zoe flops onto her bed, face forward and cries into her pillow. She heard her door creak open and looks up. Paul was standing in the doorway, with an object in his hand. "Um, you left this downstairs." He said. That object was Zoe's photo album. She snatches it from Paul and slams the door in his face, before crying some more.
Five Years Ago
Paul and Zoe are watching the sunset. "Oh, Paul! Isn't that the most beautiful sight?" Asked Zoe. "I've seen beautiful things in my day, but the most beautiful thing to me is you, Zoe!" Said Paul. "Really?!" Zoe asked excitedly. "Yes indeed. Also, I'd like you to become my girlfriend. Will you make it happen?" Paul asked.
Zoe smiles. "Of course I'll be your girlfriend! Besides, Paul, I love you." She said. Paul smiles back and tucks a strand of Zoe's hair behind her ear. "I love you too, dear." He said. As the two lean in, they immediately share their first kiss.
