this time, Arlo simps for Elaine, because I'm weird like that

Wellston Hallway, 9:23 AM

Arlo pulled his locker shut and leaned against it chatting with Holden. "Like we would've lost with you as our quarterback." Holden said, laughing. Arlo chose to associate himself with Holden, because he made a great puppet and a quote on quote, "sidekick". For the most part though, he stood around flattering him.

"We need to up our training. Our win last night was too close for comfort." It was indeed. 20 to 19, for the audience, was quite the twist, and everyone had enjoyed the suspense of the game. Arlo though, was sweating through his helmet, and it wasn't just from the physical exertion. Arlo sighed and mumbled a "whatever", letting Holden continue rambling about how he'd studied all night for the English test, and that the current mascot was doing an awful job, and that Elaine was standing right behind- ELAINE WAS STANDING BEHIND HIM?!

He spun around to face, Elaine, who looked lovely as always, Elaine who had the sweetest smile, Elaine who was waving her hand in front of his face and asking him if he was okay. "Huh?" Arlo said stupidly, eliciting a facepalm from Holden, who had by now noticed Arlo's not so subtle crush on on Elaine, the head cheerleader. "O-oh, sorry I, uhm, zoned out for a second. What was it you were saying?" Elaine giggled causing Arlo heart and stomach to do somersaults.

"Ah, I just wanted to congratulate you on the win yesterday! You were great as always!" She said kindly, choosing to ignore the odd expression on Arlo's face.

Arlo fumbled over his words. It wasn't the first time he'd been complimented for his prowess in football, but the way she said it just made him want to laugh giddily and never stop. "I, um, thank you. You were great too yesterday. Really, uh..., cheery." Arlo could only assume that the strange, drawn out noise coming from behind him was Holden expressing his disappointment in Arlo's supposed romantic advances.

"Thanks!" She said grinning at him with her gorgeous smile. She began to make light conversation with the two and while Holden made comments and was engaged in their chat, Arlo began to space out once more, staring at Elaine, though she wasn't aware of it. Holden, who feared for his friend's reputation and future relationship with Elaine, hurriedly thought of a plan. While Elaine went on about the driving test she'd be taking later today, Holden elbowed him in the stomach rather forcefully, the sudden motion bringing Arlo to the present.

"It's now or never man, ask her out!" He whispered just as Elaine came to a stop. Arlo took a deep breath.

"Elaine, uh..." he fumbled once again as she looked at him expectantly. "I... think you'll do great on the test, don't worry yourself." He finished. Holden's face fell.

"Thanks Arlo, I'll see you around." Arlo sighed as she walked away.

"It's alright, you'll get her next time." Holden said, encouragingly. Arlo replied with a halfhearted "yeah." his mind still on her.

ELA Classroom, 12:14 PM

Later during class, after he'd turned in the English assessment, he found his thoughts drifting over to the morning's incident. As Arlo thought it over some more, he came to the conclusion that he'd never gain the courage to ask her out. It would have been easier to tell if he wasn't so blinded by his love for her. Arlo, the most popular boy in school, who could woo any girl in an instant, the star of the football team, was a stuttering mess in front of Elaine. There was probably a reason for that. It was probably a sign that there were other fish in the sea.

But the more Arlo thought it over, the more fixated he became on telling her how much he loved her. "I can get any girl I want except the one I need. If I can't walk up to her, and just ask her one stupid question, what would the team say?" He imagined Holden, Blyke, and all the other guys on his star team. "I'm so lame. I'm nowhere near as great as they think I am." He put his head down on his arms, and tried to turn invisible.

Rooftop, 2:48 PM

Arlo sat by himself on the rooftop, thinking. Not about anything in particular just about his day. Thinking about his day led him to think about Elaine, once again. Speaking of Elaine, a familiar blue haired girl opened the door to the rooftop. "Great, the last person I wanted to see." Arlo mentally slapped himself for saying that. Of course he wanted to see her. He spent all of his time thinking about her.

"Oh, hey Arlo. I thought you'd be up here." Elaine said softly, making her way towards him. Arlo looked up, a little surprised.

"You were looking for me?" Elaine nodded. Arlo scooted over so Elaine could sit down next to him. "Here we go again. I'll mess up once more and ruin everything." Arlo thought. "Why can't I just talk to her? Why am I like this?"

"Arlo, are you okay? Is there something I did?" She asked nervously.

"What? No, no, what makes you think that?" Arlo said frantically, biting his lip."

"Well, it's just that you seem so awkward around me. You don't act like the Arlo I usually know. I just feel like something is up. You're only like this when I'm around, so I figure it had something to do with me. I'm just worried is all." She said, looking down.

Arlo was silent for a moment. He'd been so wrapped up in his feelings for her, that his actions led her to believe she had done something wrong. It didn't matter if he liked her. As her friend, he couldn't let her believe that what he was going through was her fault.

"Elaine, please don't worry about me. I've just been confused recently. There's something I've been meaning to do and I can't bring myself to do it." Arlo confessed.

"Is that all? Maybe I can help then!" She said kindly.

"It's now or never." Holden's words rang in Arlo's ears as he made up his mind on his next move.

"Elaine, do you want to go out with me?"
