"ame, it's not fair!" the country complained to his older, but shorter brother.
"well, if that's what you think, then go by yourself. i'm not gonna tag along my whiny little brother just because he wants to see his stupid crush," america snapped. canada bit his lip, he knew where this was going.
"he's not my crush, america, you know that. please, just let me come with you just this once, i haven't seen him in years and i wouldn't have any other chance to see him," he explained. america thought for a few minutes before giving up.
"fine, whatever. just don't follow me everywhere, that would be weird."
"of course, of course! oh, thank you so much ame, you're the best,"
"yeah, i am the best," america sighed sarcastically. his maple syrup enthusiast of a brother had had a crush on russia's little brother, ukraine, ever since they met. it was the cringiest thing he had to witness, as if it came out of a disney movie or something.
america had a lot of meetings with russia, who was the oldest of 16 kids, one of his siblings being ukraine. therefore, he saw ukraine sometimes while meeting with his coworker. ame just didn't get what canada saw in him. sure, he was kinda cute with his flower crown and all, but that's all he could think of. he was so quiet, too, nobody really paid attention to him unless he was fighting with his brother. if that's his type, then so be it, i guess? thought the striped country.
~
"how long does it take to get there?" he asked eagerly.
"jesus, nada, calm down. we'll get there when we do,"
the canadian adjusted his fluffy brown hat so that it sat better on his hair. he had to look great for him. gosh, he missed him so much, he couldn't believe how long he hadn't seen his best friend, and now; crush... ukraine, canada's thoughts raced all about him. would he still have his flower crown? will he be the same as he was before? will he even remember who he is? these questions kept coming back to him the entire car ride, keeping him busy with the task of calming himself down.
~
ukraine was reading in his room, trying to drown out the yelling from the room beside him. russia, picking fights again. he tried to focus on the book, but the letters just scrambled all over the page. furrowing his eyebrows, he glared at the text in front of him, as if trying to intimidate it into letting him focus.
suddenly, his bedroom door slammed open, knocking over a succulent that he had sitting on his desk.
"иисус россия! в чем дело?! ( jesus russia! what is your problem!? )" ukraine jumped, yelling at the insanely tall monster cowering over him. instead of speaking, he glared at him and shoved their sister belarus into his room. only after, to slam the door shut again as he left. "ты в порядке, Бела? ( are you okay, bela? )" he turned over to his little sister, muttering curses and crossing her arms tightly.
he sighed, unaware of the tears starting to fall from her eyes. "shhh, it's okay, you're okay now. you're with me," he whispered in english as he wrapped his arms around her. she was taken aback, but didn't reject the touch. he pulled her into a long, affectionate hug.
"россия сука ( russia is a bitch )" belarus snarled quietly.
"i know, bela, i know"
while ukraine was comforting her, he heard the door creak open.
"что ты хочешь россия ( what do you want russia )" he growled dangerously. he hated his brother to bits. not only was he the most selfish, rude, and insensitive country he knew, but he also hurt his sister. his baby sister, and nobody was allowed to do that.
"ukraine?" a soft voice called out. "you know i don't speak russian," the voice chuckled. the blue and yellow country shot up and looked at the doorway. that wasn't russia.
"canada?"
"hey!" the tall canadian laughed, coming in for a hug for his old pal. as he noticed that he flinched, he lowered his hands down and lost a bit of his enthusiasm. "sorry," he said quickly, not wanting to make the situation awkward.
"no, no, don't apologise," ukraine waved him off. "come on, we can talk outside," he turned to belarus and said "оставайся здесь, и не позволяй этому ублюдку в комнате ( stay here, and don't let that bastard in the room )" the small country nodded in affirmation.
while both countries were walking outside, canada couldn't help but notice tiny little things that had changed in his old friend. his flower crown consisted no longer of only blue and yellow flowers, it now included a soft shade of pink, orange, and white. not to mention the ribbons he attached on the back, with his country's colors. he liked it, he liked it a lot. it suited him well. he was wearing a really cute sweater, too. simple but effective, as they say. before he could continue admiring his companion, his voice interrupted them.
"well i haven't seen you in forever," ukraine said.
"yeah," the shorter country was leading him into the woods near his house. "where are going?" the canadian wondered aloud.
"someplace nice. there's a bench there, we can sit and talk," he said somewhat plainly. walking through branches and jumping over tree roots was hard for canada, as he was so tall, it was hard to not hit his head. "this is it," the blue and yellow country said after a few minutes. he pointed to a small clearence in front of them, with a nice bench, revealing a huge glittering lake. the other stared in awe while his friend looked at him, amused.
"how have you been, ukie?" he asked as they sat down.
"i've been okay for the most part. you?"
"same with me." canada chuckled. "you know, i've really missed you,"
"oh...thanks, i guess" he replied awkwardly. they sat in silence for a minute, the canadian feeling as if he just ruined everything, and the ukrainans mind still on his sister. he let out a shiver and his teeth chattered, thinking about what might be happening to her right now.
before he could move furthur in his thoughts, he felt a huge blob of warmth set upon his head. confused, he looked up to see his friend giggling at him. he felt his head, and noticed a hat was placed on it. taking it off to examine it, he realised it was canada's famous raccoon hat.
"don't be cold, stupid," the taller giggled.
ukraine rolled his eyes and chuckled a bit, too, not wanting to tell his companian that he didn't shiver because of the cold. ukraine let out a huge sigh before deciding to say the truth:
"i missed you too, canada,"
