Amira dreamed of her dad coming home beat up again. The same one where her mom uses magic to heal him. When Amira woke up she firmly put the dream out of her mind.
It's just a dream she told herself. It doesn't matter.
-----
The week after Halloween was Quidditch tryouts. Julián had been on the Thunderbird team ever since first year when he made Keeper on the Thunderbird JV quidditch team. Every member of the quidditch team had to try out every year, so Julián went to the tryouts. Amira and Jessie went to watch him for moral support.
Amira remembered back in first year Julián was so scared during his first game he missed every goal, but in the end the Thunderbird seeker caught the snitch and Thunderbird won. That Julián was very different from seventh year Julián who was nearly certain he was going to get on the team and who didn't let his nerves affect his playing.
The younger students trying out for the JV quidditch team tried out before the older students. There were also a lot more younger students trying out than older students. Amira was thrilled to see that Katerina and Alana from her first year group were both trying out. Katerina was trying out for Keeper, and Alana for Chaser. The positions wouldn't be announced until the older students tried out, so after the girls tried out Amira invited them to sit with her and Jessie.
"You both did great!" Amira told them when they had changed into their regular clothes.
"Thanks!" Alana responded.
"I probably won't get in," said Katerina. Amira was shocked. This was so different from the super energetic Katerina she had shown around Ilvermorny at the beginning of the year.
"Well I think you did spectacular," Amira told her. "Did you know that my friend Julián got onto the JV quidditch team when he was a first year?"
"He did?"
"Yep. And he had never flown on a broom before flying class either."
"Wow! Do you think he could give me lessons if I don't make the team or the backup team?"
"I can ask him, but we are going to go to Hogwarts, the school in England, next semester as part of a student exchange program, so he could only give you lessons until we leave."
You're going to Hogwarts?" Alana asked.
"We sure are," said Jessie.
"Wow that's so cool!" Katerina said. "Can I go to another school as part of a... what's that you called it?"
"A student exchange program."
"Yeah that. Could I do that?"
"Yeah you just have to be fourth year or up and you have to pay some money. And your parents have to agree to let you go."
"Cool! I'm totally going to do that when I'm a fourth year!"
Amira laughed. This was the Katerina she was used to.
"Hey look Julián is trying out!" said Jessie.
Amira looked up towards the quidditch goals just in time to see Julián make an excellent save.
"YES! Great save Julián!" Jessie yelled. Julián grinned down at them from his broom.
Julián saved every goal that was shot at him and went to the boys locker room to change. A few minutes later he came up and joined the four girls in the stands.
"How did I do?" he asked. Julián was excellent at hiding how nervous he was, but Amira had known him long enough to know he was super nervous. The Keeper from the JV quidditch team had just reached fourth year and had to try out for the varsity team. Amira figured this was making Julián more nervous than usual.
