The entire week after Thanksgiving Amira didn't make an effort to contact her mom, and her mom didn't contact her.
Finally Kiko called her out on it. "You can't stay mad at your mom forever," she told Amira.
Can't I, Amira thought. Out loud she said, "Yeah I know. It's just... she erased my memories of my dad and lied to me for twelve years. I don't know if I'm ready to forgive her yet,"
"You should. She was just trying to protect you because she loves you."
"How do you kno-" Amira started to say, but then remembered Kiko was extremely good at knowing what people do for love. She was a Pukwudgie after all. Amira pulled out her phone and stared at it.
"Come on let's walk," Kiko said. She took Amira's elbow and led her towards a large willow tree near The Shrouded Lake. Once they walked through the curtain of leaves created by the willow tree Amira called her mom. She picked up on the first ring.
"Amira?"
"Hey mom. I just wanted to say I'm sorry, for getting mad at you the other day. I know you were just trying to protect me."
"Oh Amira, I'm sorry too. I shouldn't have erased your memories. I was just so scared. After what happened to your grandparents and then your father, I couldn't lose you too. Though evidently erasing your memories did make me lose you, if just for a little while-"
"What do you mean after what happened to my grandparents?"
"After we fled to the United States whoever your father was hunting killed his parents, your grandparents. My parents refused to leave England with us, so they just went into hiding. Once your father died..."
"It was the last straw," Amira supplied. "Why didn't we just go into hiding?"
"We did have the fidelius charm on our house but evidently our secret keeper told someone, and that's how our house got set on fire. That's when your father decided to send us here."
"Who was your secret keeper?" Amira asked.
"Well, I'm not sure. Your father told Harry- Harry Potter- to not tell him who the secret keeper was. I assume it was someone in the auror office."
"But why-"
"He didn't want to put anyone else in danger by making someone he cared about the secret keeper, and he thought an auror would be safe."
Amira furrowed her eyebrows. "I don't... that doesn't make any sense."
"It doesn't make sense to me either, but the auror who told was sent to Azkaban. I don't think the auror, whoever it was, meant to tell though."
Then Kiko and Amira's phones buzzed. "It's a text from Max," Kiko said. Her eyes widened. "Amira did your parents go to Hogwarts?"
"Mom did you go to Hogwarts?" Amira asked.
"I did, actually. I was a Ravenclaw." she said wistfully.
"And dad?"
"He was a Hufflepuff."
Amira smiled sadly. There was silence for a moment, then the bell rang for the end of the lunch hour. "I've got to go mom. Bye. I love you."
"Bye-bye sweety. I love you too," she said, and hung up the phone.
"Yeah both my parents went to Hogwarts," Amira told Kiko once she hung up. "Why did you want to know?"
"Max just asked you in the group chat."
"Oh well you can tell him my mom was a Ravenclaw and my dad was a Hufflepuff."
"Cool!" Kiko said.
"Come on let's get to class," Amira said. She didn't want to think about her dad.
