In a teenagers life, there are a couple of words we never want to hear…”eat your veggies”….”do you homework”…but for me, when I hear “Mom’s home” thats never good. I quickly grabbed Jace’s hand and headed for the door. Almost sliding into the end table, we raced down the stairs into the living room.
“I put Chester in the basement for you already!” Yelled Heather so she skidded to a halt, trying to put her shoes on. I grabbed my coat, and Jace was putting on his shoes when i heard the door creak open. In stepped my mother, in a blue blouse, that was wrinkled, and had a few stains on it. Her hair was all tangled and she looked a mess. She had bags under her eyes, and she was definitely drunk.
“Ollie, darling…you never told me you were having guests!” She slurred as she sloppily walked into the room taking her shoes off. I cringed at the name she used to call me as a child. She wasn’t that lady anymore, so she has no right to call me that.
“Mom, this is Jace, he is a friend from school.” Jace reached his hand out to shake my mother’s hand but she just nodded in response, “and you know Heather..” I said pointed to Heather who was looking everywhere else except my mother. She hated her, with a burning passion, after how she treated me.
“Yes, how are you sweetie, how is your family?” She slurred as she walked near Heather. Heather backed away from her touch, and looked at me, “Lets go.”
With that I pushed Jace to the door, with Heather right behind me. We reached the door, and before i was fully out of the house, my mother’s voice stopped me.
“Olivia…”
I stopped, I had one hand on Jace’s back, Heather had her hand on my back, and my other hand was holding my coat. “Yes mom..?”
“Stop by Michael’s grave and pay him a visit for his Birthday, it’s the least you could do after you….”
I heard nothing else out of her mouth. After she said my brothers name, my hand on jace’s back tightened, and within seconds, it was like a switch up. Instead of me behind him, he was behind me pushing me out the door. Heather turned around yelling something at my mother, before she slammed the door, and left. I was numb. How could she honestly say that to me, after everything that happened.
“Your mother is the worst person ever. How could she say that to you, honestly. If I were you, I’d go to Child Protective…” Heather was going on and on about my mother, and how she was a bad person, but I already knew all this. it was not news to me. But her bringing it up, must have brought back horrible memories, and i just couldn’t take it anymore.
“Heather…”
“She doesn’t even love you, honestly she is crazy. And your father is another one, he is so rude, the way he yells at you all the time, and never cares about you.”
“…heather…HEATHER STOP! THEY DON’T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. IT’S THE BEER AND WINE AND LIQUOR. THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND. THIS WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IF WE DIDN’T GO OUT THAT NIGHT, THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY FINE IF IT WASN’T FOR ME!”
When I finally stopped screaming, I looked at Heather and Jace, they were both shocked. They should have known it was coming, even I knew. I just never thought it would happen this quickly. I had snapped. “Heather, I’m so sorry…I didn’t mean to..”
“hey, It’s okay, it happens, I know you didn’t mean it. It’s been a bad day..” She said looking me in the eyes and hugging me. I felt bad, but I knew she understood. I looked over at Jace who was staring into the abyss, just thinking. Suddenly his head shot up, and he spoke.
“Montgomery, do you want to go..” Jace said not moving, He looked me straight in the eyes as if nothing happened. As if I wasn’t crazy. He just looked at me, like i was a normal.
“Where Jace. Where would I go…” I asked giving him attitude, I noticed it, and my face softened right away. I looked at him and gave him an apologetic look.
“The Cemetery.”
