Chapter 3: She is my mother

After we had taken our lunch Damien and I dropped Kate at her apartment before he took me home.I walked in to the house and found mom watching some reality show on the television.

"Was that Damien who dropped you off"She asked

"Yeah he is the one"

"How many times have we talked about that boy.He is not a good company to keep Mia .If I remember correctly he dropped school while in high school "

I just rolled my eyes before replying
"He finished high school and started his own business which is doing very well by the way."

She just snorted at that and I ignored as I sat on the couch adjacent to hers.

"I hope you did not call me here to start nagging me about changing courses cause I will not allow you to take any course apart from medicine. If you think you can......."

"Its about granny. Your mother" I shouted before she could finish whatever she wanted to say.
She was shocked before she masked her face.

"Which granny? What are you talking about? "She asked as she stood up.

"Does the name Dr. Ruth Sanchez ring a bell?" I asked her.

"I have never heard of her."She said then turned away.
I watched her a while before I stood up,I removed the card that Kate had given me then I gave her.

She stiffened when she saw the card.

"Where did you get this?"

"Does it matter where I got it, this just proves that my granny exists and you having the same last name means that you know her"I said.

"People share names most of the time Mia.You having this card does not prove anything. By the way I have a patient who needs to be operated on so I need to leave early "She said then took her car keys.

"No need mum," I stopped her "I have decided to move out.I have been patient enough with you mum.I have tried to please you for so long but if you cannot even trust me enough to share your secrets with me then am not good enough. "I shouted

"Mia I... .."she tried to say but I raised my hand to stop her.

"Am not yet through mum. You have always preferred your work over me that I don't even remember the last time we had time to bond just like mother and daughter .It's clear that you prefer your own company therefore I better go than bother you. " I said then stomped off to my bedroom.

In the bedroom I took a suitcase and threw in some of my clothes. I planned to come back for the rest as I did not want another minute in that house. When I came from the bedroom dragging my suitcase I passed mum without looking her in the face.I reached the front door before I heard her voice.

"She is my mother. "She said in a small whisper. I turned back and she had a defeated look on her face.

"Yes she is my mother "She repeated loudly before she slumped down on the floor and started sobbing. I did not know what to do as this was new to me.I had never seen her break down before.

" She is the reason of my misery. She wanted me to give you away.She took my child. " She cried.

I was confused by her statement, why did granny want to take me away and how did she do it ? I had so many questions that needed to be answered so I left my suitcase at the door and went towards her.

"What do you mean mom?"I enquired.

She started to sob harder and narrated to me how she got pregnant while still in high school and how granny was devastated and blamed her for tarnishing the Sanchez name.The Sanchez family was respected and very influential and therefore granny wanted my mom to give up her child for adoption as soon as she gave birth.

When my mother gave birth it turned out that she was carrying twins. I was shocked to learn that I had a twin sister but she told me to wait as she explain everything.Apparently she had begged her mother to allow her hold her kids for an hour before taking them.

She had then texted her best friend who came and helped her in escaping. She had escaped with both of us and refused to go back home if her mother could not accept her kids.

"All had been well until two weeks later when you were ill and I rushed you to a paediatrician. I left your twin in the care of a nanny but when my best friend came back from school, she found the nanny crying and Maya had already been taken by my mother." She said

"Is Maya the name of my sister? " I asked calmly.

She nodded her head in affirmative. I was seething with anger but I controlled myself as I digested everything she had said so far.

"So what happened afterwards? "

" I tried to to get Maya but she had already been adopted. I had no other choice but to run away with you. I got two jobs and went back to school. It was not easy but I managed to get a scholarship which saw me become a doctor. I later on tried locating your sister but I have never been successful. "

I sat down on the couch in a daze.How could she even do something like that to her own daughter? And where the hell had she taken my sister?I had so many questions without answers.

I decided to talk to Kate about my findings but before that I called the hospital where my mum worked and told them that she was not feeling well to perform the scheduled operation therefore they had to find another surgeon or reschedule the operation. I decided to order some Italian food which was my mother's favourite and we ate together. She was so upset but she ate a little and I also apologized for judging her.She explained further that she had been searching for Maya ever since I was little but she had never been successful. Maya and I were identical twins therefore she had to use my photos whenever she looked for her.As for my grandma, she had never shown any remorse and that is why mum treated her as non-existent.

The bitch had it coming I told myself as I got in the car and drove off to Kate's place.
