August

They had been driving for almost forty minutes. Though they had tried to form a plan before leaving, August still felt as if they were running into the unknown.

He knew the kidnapper would no longer be at the gas station - he'd seen her drive away. So how were they supposed to track her down? It was a crazy thought that they would manage this on their own. The woman who had kidnapped Chester was potentially dangerous - how dangerous, was unknown - making the situation unpredictable.

He sighed softly as they stopped at an intersection, his mind reeling. August hoped they wouldn't fail. Cerelia hadn't said anything the whole drive, her gaze tracking every surface outside, looking for signs. Her long fingers were curled around the bottom of the seat, her grip so tight that her hands were white. Her breath still came in short and irregular intervals, her whole body trembling ever so slightly.

She needed to compose herself. If she let her emotions control her now, then how would she react when she saw her brother? Or worse, the woman who had kidnapped him?

A car honked, jolting August out of his thoughts. He had been up all night now, twenty-four hours straight, since leaving North Carolina. He ran his hand through his hair, worried he might have started something he would regret.

More silence passed, the air between them tense.

"How long has he been missing?"

Her eyes skirted to him, and he briefly saw her jump at his voice, before she controlled herself. She was so wound up that she reacted like a deer in headlights at the slightest thing.

"Twenty-three days." Her eyes fluttered shut for a moment as she took a deep breath. "Since Halloween." She quickly looked out of the passenger window again, but not before August saw the shimmer of a tear on her cheek. Before he knew what he was doing, he reached for her hand, giving it a tight squeeze.

"He'll be alright. He was fine when I saw him."

Of course he didn't actually know that. The boy had been asleep and only his face peaked passed the window.

"Its been 23 days; if he was alive and well a few hours ago, he'll be okay now too. We need to have faith." August wasn't sure if he was reassuring the girl or himself, but he knew he needed to say something. "We will find your brother - alive and safe. I promise." His voice was quiet and at first he wasn't sure she'd heard, but after a moment her hand tightened around his.

"Thank you." Her voice was a mere whisper but he knew she meant it, the emotion when she spoke baring her heart.

"You're welcome."

Hearing her thanks, and the emotion behind it, confirmed to August that he had made the right decision by trying to help her.
