Chapter 9

"Everyone! For the hundredth time, we are leaving in an hour. Pack your stuff or we're leaving it here!" I have been screaming at them like this for the past hour. Apparently nobody likes their clothes, toys, and phones. I sigh. Is it too hard for someone to put a few things in a bag and put it by the door? I don't think so.

"Bella! Where's my wetsuit?" Taylor yells from two rooms away. I roll my eyes.

"Why do you need to know?" We won't be surfing in Washington anyway. We're slaves now.

"It's for the greater good!" What? What does 'greater good' even mean? It's a wetsuit!

"Greater good? I am your best friend! I am the greatest good you are ever gonna get!" I yell.

"Where is my wetsuit?!" Taylor rolls out of the bedroom in her wheelchair. I glare at her while she just stares at me. I finally give up, "It's in the hamper in the bathroom."

She suddenly smiles at me and wheels away. I growl in frustration. Why do I always lose these battles?

Suddenly Emily walks through the door. That's strange. I just brought her to dance class twenty minutes ago.

"Hey. Why are you home so early?" I ask. I notice she has been crying. She drops her bag and runs to me with open arms. We hug for a moment and I wipe her tears.

"What's wrong?" I need to know. She's really scaring me.

"They're gone." She simply says. What does she mean? "All the dance teachers have been sent to their covens. The few kids left that haven't been deported were sent back to their families. They told us if we weren't gone in two hours, any stragglers would be killed immediately." She starts to sob on my shoulder.

"Oh sweetie. I know you loved your teachers and friends, but we have to go to stay alive. Do you understand?" She looks at me and nods. "Good. Now go pack your stuff we're out of here in half an hour."

Emily runs off and I am left to pack.

-------------------------

The plane ride was like any other plane ride. My ears were popping the entire time so I chewed on my last piece of gum. I savored the mint flavor and died a little inside when it wasted away to nothing in my mouth. I reluctantly spit it out at the airport.

We arrived just on time and immediately walked to the exit. We watched cars pass by that were picking up other slaves, but it was nice to imagine I was visiting Charlie during my summer vacation.

I pondered this when a huge limo pulls up. A driver steps out holding a sign with our names on it.

I didn't recognize the driver for a moment until...."Paul?"

"Hey Bella! It's so great to see you." He stammers out in shock.

I put our bags in the trunk and put Emily in the car seat that was conveniently put in the back. By now, Taylor has gotten sick of everyone's help so she manages things on her own. She gets into the car with no problem.

"Do you work for the Cullens?" I ask once we start driving away.

"Yep. They've been really nice to all their servants so you got put in a good group." He smiles to show his sincerity. This isn't how I remembered him.

"Where are the others?" I couldn't help but ask. Paul starts to look uncomfortable in his seat. he squirms and looks at me with sad eyes. "Most of them stayed in Volterra to work for the Volturi. The others are dead because they weren't strong enough."

I can only nod and stare. I am so used to losing the ones I love that announcements like these don't phase me anymore.

"Bella?" I turn around to see Emily looking out the window and taking everything in. "Yes?" I answer.

"Do you think the Cullens are nice?"

I shrug. I haven't spoken to them since my birthday. What if they've changed? I have to make something up that will reassure Emily. "I think they will be kind people if we do what they say." She seems content with this. Emily nods her head and continues to stare out the window.

We continue driving through a familiar forest when Taylor gasps, "Holy shit!" I turn to see a castle standing on a hill. It's beautiful. We drive over a bridge and are greeted with three servants once we exit the car.

"Hello. Welcome to Cullen Manor. The three of us have been assigned to each of you to train you for your tasks as a servant. My name is Annie, this is Lucy and this is America." The first and oldest looking maid says.

They look genuinely kind. Annie looks to be in her late thirties. She has brown hair that stops at her mid back. She seems to have bags under her eyes and dark circles from sleep deprivation. Who could blame her? She has a short build and is on the large side when it comes to weight.

"I know you ladies want to stick together, but I was told to take Taylor to her room and give her a tour to the manor." Annie explains as she reaches for the handles of Taylor's wheelchair so she could push her. Taylor swats her hand away and rolls herself inside. Before she is out of sight she turns, "I'll see you guys soon. Don't have too much fun without me!" She winks before she rolls away with Annie at her side.

The next maid is Lucy. She is petite with long, blonde hair. She looks only a little older than I am. She seems to be fragile with the way she presents herself. "Come along little one." She says in a kind voice. Emily hugs my legs and refuses to let go.

"Go on Emily. I'll catch up with you later." I guide her to Lucy. She takes her hand and slowly walks away. Before she turns a corner she looks at me over her shoulder and I wave.

I am left alone with America. "Come with me." She simply states. Her appearance is very different. She has the same slim body as me with red hair and green eyes. She's pretty but not beautiful.

"Your name is very interesting. I've never heard of someone named America." I say to start up a conversation as she walks me to my room.

"Everyone says that to me. I was cursed with a weird name so everyone looks at me strangely when they first meet me." We both laugh and it echoes through the long hallway. "My mom named me America because when I was in her "stomach" I would always kick. It finally got to the point where she had to name me after this country because I couldn't stop fighting to get out. She named me after our country because we never gave up and never stopped fighting." She smiles once she finishes her story. I wish my name had a good story to go with it. I was just named after Grandma Swan.

We walk down a hallway until we stop at a very large door.

"This is your room. You have the best one of all the maids and servants. This was required by Master Edward. You start working tomorrow at 4 in the morning. Here's the key to your room. My room's down the hall if you have any questions." America starts to walk away once she knows there is nothing else to say.

"Hey!" I yell to get her attention. I have this feeling that I can't explain. "Do you want to hang out some time? I have this feeling we are going to be fast friends." I say. She smiles and nods.

"I have that same feeling too." She turns and walks away.

I unlock the door to my room to see a huge suite. My own bathroom, a stereo with my favorite CD's, a king size bed with a canopy, a closet almost as big as Alice's, and a sitting area with couches and a table.

I can definitely get used to this. Thanks Edward.
