"I was in the apartment with my mom. Luke said he was going to get the door to let the pizza guy in. I was setting out the plates and cups with my mom, and we heard a thump...."

"My mom drank it, and then passed out somehow. The man burst through the door, and 2 others grabbed me and dragged me into the hall...."

"I woke up in an entirely different city. It wasn't Brooklyn. I took a shower, and put on clothes with these weird symbols on them. I went into the kitchen, just to see if anyone was in the apartment, and the man came up behind me."

The black haired girl, Isabelle, looked at me strangely. "Did he say his name? Did he say what he wanted with you?" She inquired, and I purse my lips.

I don't think I should tell them. If Valentine was evil, I don't want to be known as his daughter, if it was even true.

"No, he didn't say his name. But he said that he knew my mom. I guess he was looking for her, and found me with her," I tell them, and Jace looks at me with suspicious eyes.

Isabelle gestures for me to go on, and tell the rest of the story.

"The 2 other guys came in the room. The man called them Pangborn and Blackwell. He said they were bodyguards or something. If I wanted to go outside of the apartment, they had to follow me.

"The man left, and I just kind of wanted to get outside and see where I was. I told them that I wanted to go to a mall, something every girl wanted to do. I didn't actually want to, but I needed to say something believable."

I sucked in a shaky breath, and touched one of the bruises on my knuckles. I had landed on my hand when I woke up in here.

"They followed me, and I was looking everywhere, trying to find a map. Finally I found on, and walked by it. I tried glancing at it, and it said Manhattan. I was closer to home than I thought.

"I walked forward for the next few minutes, and it was getting dark. I saw an alley ahead of me, to the left. It was open on both sides, and the other end was right across from a police station. If I ran in there, they couldn't get me.

"When I passed by it, I immediately tried to run through. I got about 9 feet, and one of them slammed me down on the ground. They started hitting me, and kicking me. They kept telling me that if I tried that again then it would be worse.

"After a while, I heard a little boy's voice, and barking. The guys ran down the street, and I passed out."

This was true, and horrifying. When she said that someone named Max found me, I guess it was the little boy.

"Would you excuse us for a second? Jace and I have to talk," Isabelle says, and grabs Jace by the arm.

They go into the hall, and shut the door. There were windows in the doors, and I saw them bickering. I overheard the word "lying." Jace clamped a hand over Isabelle's mouth after that, and looked over at me.

I pretended I didn't hear, and played with a thread in the white sheets of the bed.

They came back into the room, and walked over to my bed. I looked up at them.

"Since you're recovered now, we're going to move you into one of the rooms. Our parents are gone, and Hodge needs to talk to you," Jace says pleasantly, and I nod.

"Who's Hodge?" I ask as we descend down the hallways. Isabelle said she needed to talk to her brother, so Jace is taking me to the library to meet "Hodge."

"Hodge takes care of the Institute. He trained us, and takes care of us. He's one of our friends."

We arrive at a set of double doors. Jace pushes them open, and lets me through.
