"My name is Valentine Morgenstern," the white haired man said, and I raised my eyebrows.
"Your name is a holiday? Yes, because that isn't cheesy," I say, and Valentine laughs lightly.
"Ah, you have your mother's sense of humor, I see," he observes, and I almost roll my eyes. I would have, had I been in front of anyone else.
But instead I narrow my eyes, and he puts his hands down. He takes a step forward, ignoring the fact that I was slowly edging away from him.
"Where's my mom?" I demand, and this time I manage to keep my voice steady.
"She's in the next room over, sleeping. Do you mind telling me what she drank?" Valentine asks calmly, but I could tell he had a hidden fire in his eyes.
"I'll make a deal with you. I give you information, and you tell me whatever is happening. If you tell me what I want to hear, I'll give you info about what she drank," I propose, but I knew the chances of him agreeing. It was a risk.
He raises his head, debating whether it not to accept. I was terrible at deals, and I had a sliver of doubt that I made it convincing.
Finally, he says, "I accept your offer, so you want to know what's happening, do you?"
He walked around the island of the kitchen, and stops at a glass window above the sink. The sun was up now, and morning traffic was coming on.
"Yes, I want to know everything. But if I think you're not telling me everything, I won't tell you anything," I tell him.
As soon as I finished saying that, he spun around angrily and gave me a menacing stare. "That was not part of our deal. You either keep your end of the deal or I will not tell you the slightest bit of information."
"Fine, just tell me," I blurt out, and push back my red hair. I was bad at this, and I really wished that I had remembered all the times Simon and I bargained with each other for favors. That might at least give me some ideas.
"Well, if you would like to know so badly-"

I shake my head free of the memories; I didn't need to relive the entire story.
I hid so many things from these people, and I don't even know if they're going to find out tomorrow. Whatever the Clave is, they dot sound like someone I wanted to be looking inside my head.
Once again, I thought of everything that's happened in the past few days. But the thing that worried me most was that Mom could be being tortured right now, by someone who claims to be my dad.
It wasn't the fact that he's a psycho that scared me. It was the fact that he could be right, and my whole life would be a lie. I didn't want Valentine to be in any way related to me. But maybe he is lying. Maybe he thinks I'm his kid, but I'm really not.
For the next few minutes, I thought about the possibilities of some kind of mistake. But I soon realized I wasn't going to get any sleep.
I get off the sofa, and check that Isabelle was still sleeping. When I knew that she was, I silently opened the door, and slipped out.
Moonlight was illuminating the halls, so they were still visible. I walked aimlessly through the Institute until I got lost and couldn't figure out where I was.
This was fitting, I suppose. I didn't know where I was anyway. I have been so confused over the last few days, and I couldn't even figure out what to do. I was in this alone. Luke, gone. Mom, gone. Simon, gone. Everyone, gone!
I walk a little farther, and I soon find myself going up stairs, a lot of them. I guess I couldn't get any more lost than I already was, so it wouldn't do any bad to go further.
