When the monsters came above ground, they did not expect the seven original mages to have cursed the barrier to not just imprison them, but once it is broken and they pass... well... they not only lost their magic but also their size. The tallest monster was the size of a human's middle finger and the smallest the size of a thumbnail. Humans saw this as an opportunity to make money, and quickly snatched them up.
And that's where Vita Chartam came in.

I yawned from my boring blue and black striped bed sheets. Today marked two years the monsters were captured, ten years since I started living by myself, and seven years since I met him.
"You're really going to adopt a monster today?" W.D. Gaster strolled into the room, his form glitching through my door like it was nothing. "I thought I was enough for you~" He cooed and ruffled my shoulder length brown hair. Oh yeah, I was stuck with him for life apparently. He said something about time travel and universes, but I just think it's because of the necklace I wear. See seven years ago I was hiking in the wood around mount ebott, when I found this obsidian heart necklace. Next thing I knew this guy pretty much became my stalker.
"Yes, Gaster," I sighed and rubbed my natural ruby red eyes. "You know I've been saving up and trying to locate all of them for month now."
"Yes yes," Gaster waved a skeleton hand in front of his face. "But I still question why you want to try and revert them back. Isn't this the easier route?" I rolled my eyes and stretch, humming happily when my spine popped. "This is also the wrong way, they have been trapped for decades under that mountain, Gaster,"My eyes met his mismatched ones. "They deserve some freedom."
He shrugged, as if to say "don't say I didn't warn you" before walking back into the living room. Grumbling over his attitude today, I slid out from under my covers and yawned. I rolled my shoulders, earning more satisfying pops, and then grabbed my cargo pants and white t shirt from the closet. I frowned and looked around my room.
"Gaster have you seen my-" I opened the door, and a jumper was shoved in my face.
"Left it on the dinner table again, Vita," Gaster smirked and I huffed.
"Don't get sassy, you leave your shoes everywhere too!" It was true, I once found those shiny black dress shoes in the shower once. How they got there I will never know. "Now do you want to come or do I have to worry about you burning the apartment down?"
"That was one time..." He grumbled, but slid a sleek black coat over his turtleneck anyway. Grabbing my keys, I locked the door behind us and then headed towards the elevator.
"Why do you seem so adamant on me not helping them anyways?" I asked as we waited for the elevator. "You seemed pretty excited when I first mentioned it, what changed?" The elevator opened and we stepped inside. "I made a mistake when I ended up dying, I don't think they remember me anymore.... And if they do...." His eyes focused on the doors, the sentence just running off. He had told me about the accident, and that he was a scientist, but did he actually leave family behind when he was thrown into the Core?
"Well," I broke the silence as the doors opened. "That was the past, and if you're right and no one remembers you then build a new present."
"I wish it were that simple, darling," Gaster sighed and held the entrance door open for me. We walked towards my red truck in silence, ignoring all the weird or disgusted looks we were getting from the people around us. Most of the people here are used to seeing gaster around, but there will always be those few who think he shouldn't be here or try to get me to sell him to them. I sat down in the driver's seat and closed the door as Gaster was buckling in.
