Some Years earlier
Remus sat cross legged in his hospital gown on the grimy floor next to the blanket that was their bed. He traced his fingers through the dirt, making abstract pictures and babbling to the invisible person in the room.
He paused. "Virgil, is he listening?"
Virgil opened his eyes. He was curled up on the blanket. He felt around the room for the now familiar presence.
It looked up from where it was leaning over Remus's shoulder and Virgil felt it mentally say hello.
"He is."
Remus went back to talking and drawing.
The door swung open and everyone tensed. A doctor in a white coat looked over a clip board at them.
"Come along," he said ruffly.
Virgil and Remus scrambled to their feet, knowing better than to resist. The girl had long since died. Remus reached out and grabbed Virgil's hand and they stumbled past the doctor on their scrawny legs. He directed them to walk down the hall. They did and the person floated behind them.
They got to a room and a doctor started fumbling with keys to open it.
"Hurry up, Sarah," the doctor barked at a sullen looking women coming up stairs and carrying a tray full of funny colored liquids and long needles.
Virgil had been through this process countless time but for some reason he felt more scared. The doctor and nurse felt... off. He clung to Remus and Remus wrapped his arms around him protectively. He was scared too.
The doctor finally found the right key and opened the door. Inside were instruments that made the room look more like a torture chamber than a lab. And it was.
"Go on." The doctor tried to shove them in the room but Remus grabbed the edge of the door frame and pulled Virgil away from the doctor, determined no one would hurt his friend again. The man grumbled and pulled something out of his pocket that zapped with electricity. He shocked Remus who jerked back and into the room.
The doctor started to follow but then stopped and stared at the nurse. "Sarah, what 're ya doin?"
Remus and Virgil braved looking around the door to see what he was looking at. The nurse was a few steps past the stairs but kept teetering back.
"Someone's shoving me!"
"No one's shoving you!"
The doctor looked down and saw that the two boys could make a break for it if they tried. He shoved the taser thing into Remus's neck. Remus's head snapped back in agony and he shrieked and fell into the hall, dragging Virgil with him.
Virgil felt red hot murderous anger. But it wasn't his.
Someone suddenly flickered into visibility next to the nurse and shoved her violently back and down the stairs. As she fell bottles shattered around her.
The doctor cursed and ran towards the stairs but the person turned around and the doctor froze in terror.
The man wasn't tall and had patches of black and red skin scorched up his arms and torso. The left side of his body was mostly covered in scales. Two extra pairs of arms extended out of his torso and shoulders and he opened his mouth so that they could see his fangs.
