Chapter Ten
The Return of Edmund

Word Count: 1.5k

The sound of Melody's sobs blocked out the sound of any footsteps that made their way up to her.

Her cries were dying down when a pair of arms wrapped themselves around her waist. She pulled her attention from the camp to see Peter sitting beside her.

Without saying anything, she moved closer to him and buried her head in his neck. It wasn't really for hiding she was crying; it was more for comfort. She felt safe and secure around him.

He rubbed her back, letting her relax and calm down. He had seen when Aslan left her and when she started crying. He didn't know what he told her, but it obviously hurt her in some way.

Eventually, Melody removed her head from Peter's neck and wiped her eyes from the tears that had dried there.

"Feeling any better?" He asked her quietly.

She nodded. Instead of burying her head again, she rested it on his shoulder. "I never knew my mom..." She started explaining. She knew Peter was curious about what Aslan told her, but she also knew he probably wouldn't ask. He was too nice of a guy. "My dad raised me telling me she was in a better place. And he was right. That better place was here, in Narnia." She managed to form a small sad smile.

"So, you get that tail from her?" Peter asked, sort of jokingly and sort of actually serious.

She laughed a little at that, lightly pushing his shoulder with her head. "I do. She was a mermaid here." Her smile faltered a little, but she tried to hold onto it.

Peter's grip around her tightened. "I'm sure she wished she could have been there with you."

Once again, new tears started to fill her eyes. "I have no one now. My mom died here, and my dad died over in America. I'm alone..." She whispered, closing her eyes and letting out a sob.

Peter was quick to think. He used their position to turn Melody to face him. He removed his arms from her waist and put them on either side of her face, wiping away her tears. "That's not true. You have us. I know Lu looks up to you, and Susan hasn't had a friend like you in forever. Ed, he's more of the wild card, but I'm sure he can learn to deal with you."

She smiled a little, letting out a little laugh and lifting her head off his shoulder. She helped him wipe her tears.

"And me," He continued, looking into her eyes. "You have me, too. I..." He paused a little, noticing that both of them were slowly leaning forward.

Melody noticed what was happening and blushed, quickly pulling away. "It's... um... It's late. We should get some sleep." She looked away from him, trying to hide her embarrassment.

She went from crying to trying to hide that she wanted to kiss him. How mature of her.

Peter cleared his throat and stood up, holding out his hand to help her up. She hesitantly took it, and they walked back down the hill to the camp together.

The whole walk was silent until they got to the girl's tent. Melody was about to go inside, but Peter stopped her. "Melody, I just wanted to say," he paused, rubbing the back of his neck.

Melody bit her lip, hiding a smile. She walked up to him and kissed him on the cheek. "Let's give it some more time." She whispered before going into her tent.

She could see Peter's shadow linger for a moment before walking off to his tent.

She was so glad Lucy and Susan were already fast asleep. She laid down on her makeshift bed, a smile on her face as she easily fell asleep. She might have gotten the news she's been wondering about for years and had broken her down, but Peter knew how to put the pieces back together.
