Briar and I stood in the middle of my room starring at the book on my desk. When I could finally find my voice, I asked Briar what he meant. “What do you mean ‘this is where our friendship is tested’? And magic, I don’t know what to think.” I told him honestly. I was trying to go through every natural scientific possibility for what the hell just happened. Nothing. Nothing came to mind. And I was a Nerd. I knew every scientific possibility. What just happened was impossible.
Briar sighed and I looked at him. His beautiful eyes looked so full of many emotions. Was he just as mystified as I? “Mila, I have to come clean about something and you’re not going to like it.” Briar said in defeat.
I started to get nervous. Did he have cancer? Was he a serial killer? Was he going to tell me he had a child? Oh god that would suck. Was I ready for that? Could I mother a child? I hope the child was a boy. Not that girls were bad, but I was scared of playing dress up with his daughter. I could play in mud with his son.
Snap at of it MILA! Man, I am so pathetic. Here I am trying to see if I could raise his kid and frankly we aren’t even dating. Yet.
No, never, you stupid girl. UGH!
“Mila.” Briar said as he let out a deep breathes.
Briars face had me in a panic. Was he about to tell me I am he didn’t like me? Wouldn’t that suck. We had classes together and he happened to live across the street from me. If he told me he didn’t like me, I’d feel so worthless. Does that make me weak?
“I am a witch.” He said drawing me out of my thoughts.
“Oh thank god.” I let out before I realized it.I was so thankful he didn't have a kid.
“God has nothing to do with it.” Briar said with a smirk.
“What?” I asked. “I totally didn’t mean to say that out loud.” I groaned at my stupidity and then cleared my head of thoughts before continuing. “Look, if you’re Wiccan, I have no problem with it. It is a part of who you are. It is what you believe. Personally, I don’t see what it has to do with what just happened and why you think this will be a test of friendship.”
Briar chuckled. “Mila, I am not Wiccan. Far from it actually.”
I looked at him and felt my brows crinkle. “I am lost.” I admitted as I took a seat on my bed. I pushed the books and left over paintings away from me as I pulled my knees up to my chest. I held myself and felt a headache coming from all the excitement. Briar disappeared and came back a few minutes later holding a bunch of candles. He set them up around the bedroom and added to my already candle filled room.
I watched him in curiosity as he sat down on the ground in the middle of my bedroom. He sat with his legs crossed and stared at the sole candle he set in front of him.
I watched him for a few long seconds before my patience wore out. “What are you doing?” I asked softly.
Briar didn’t answer. He didn’t move nor even blink. He just sat there. Finally after a minute he spoke.
“Watch.” He whispered.
I slowly moved to the end of my bed. I was going to check his fever and see if he was ill however, I stopped when he started speaking a language I never heard before. It was beautiful.
“Solas.” He said. Just as he spoke, the power went out.
“Damn it.” I muttered as I got up and went to check my light switch. Before I could make it to the switch Briar whispered another string of words.
“Solas Tine.” He said.
I watched as one by one all the candles in my room sprang to life. The wicks caught fire and my room was filled with dancing shadows casted by the flames.
“Oh- My- God.” I gasped. I spun around and sure as hell, every candle was lit. Briar muttered under his breath and the candles dimmed. “What… was… that?” I asked as I waved my hand over one of the now barely lit candle. The flame shivered before blowing out. I waited to see it if would relight.
How did all the candles ignite all at once? What was happening today? Heck, better question what was wrong with this town?! It is so strange!
“Mila.” Briar called to me. I was still waving my hand over the candle that I now held in my hand. I was curious if it was motion sensored or something. “Mila.” He called again.
“Yes.” I asked shakily.
“C’mere.”
I stopped waiting for the candle to light again and turned to face him. He was now standing in the middle of the room with his hands in his pockets. He looked nervous. It was cute. I snapped out of my crazy little thoughts and walked closer to him. I finally noticed how good he looked today. He wore a red shirt that made his eyes shine. His hair was messy in that cute yet sexy sort of way. He wore nicely fitted jeans. His outfit gave hints that his body was incredible. What was he hiding under there?
I stopped a foot away from him and looked up. He was tall and looked down at me. “Do you believe in magic?” He asked me again.
I looked back down at the candle and the others around my room. They were still lit. Did I believe in magic? No… Science I did. I believe in science. Science was evidence. Magic, Magic had no evidence in the world. So no, I did not believe in magic. The candles… It is unexplainable.
Briar must have understood what my answer was because he responded. “Mila, keep an open mind.” He told me as he stepped closer and reached for my hand. My heart rate jumped and I could feel the blood rush to my cheeks. Briars hands encircled mine and I wished I wasn’t holding the damn candle.
It would be perfect if he’d kiss me right now. It would be my first kiss. The setting was perfect. Candles were lit, I had brushed my teeth and he looked so…. Oh god he was cute. “Ready?” He asked in his husky low voice. It sent shivers up my spine. Oh god yes! I was SO ready for this.
Briar brought the candle and my hands up. I looked down in confusion to see what he was doing. He lifted his left hand off of mine and held it above the candle. The wax was cool against my skin while his right hand was like fire. I couldn’t shake how intimate it felt to me. I felt Briars hand under my chin was forced to look back into his amazing eyes. “Watch.” He said as he looked down. I followed his gaze and my eyes settled on our hands holding the candle.
“Tine.” He said and the candles wick caught aflame.
“Oh my god.” I whispered as I watched in amazement. “Y-y… You… You made the candles catch fire.” I stated as I felt my legs shake. “You, you, you said you w-w were a witch. You mean a real witch, didn’t you?”
Briar cleared his throat. “Yes.”
I couldn’t tear my eyes off the flickering flame. “My first kiss would have been better news than this.”
