Although Crypto had done his best to make you feel safe and secure in the time since Revenant's arrival, your nerves had hardly subsided. Revenant wasn't one to lie, he had no reason to, so you knew he wasn't here specifically to kill you, but still... the thought of you having to fight him sends shivers down your spine, and haunted your brain. You had seen him in action, it was the things nightmares were made of. And now, as the all too familiar ship descended into the world's edge, you prayed, as insane as it sounded, that you and Revenant would be fighting the same battle, that you and that monster would be on the same team. Crypto, from across the ship, sent a supportive glance that you didn't even notice. Your hands were clasped tightly to each other, and eyes were locked on the banners that announced the assigned teams.
The same approaching announcement rang overhead, but you didn't hear anything besides inaudible muffles.
The teams finally began to appear, and your hands squeezed so hard your knuckles became white.
The first team you saw included Crypto, Bloodhound, and Wattson. You felt a twinge of disappointment when you saw Crypto wasn't going to be on your team, but it was overwhelmed with relief when you saw Revenant wasn't your enemy, for now, at least.
Finally, you saw your cheery face, contradictory to your current one, appear on the screen.
You, Lifeline, and Revenant.
You felt so relieved, so horrifyingly relieved, you could cry. You knew this mentality was straining, like a rubber band being pulled beyond its limits, but you had to shove it aside, for now, and focus on the mission. You stood beside lifeline and her next to Revenant. Both of you were unusually silent, the unnerving presence of an intimidating legend never before seen in battle was silencing.
Revenants intimidation spread to his skill in the battlefield as well.
There were no words to describe it, the pure violence of it all shook you down to the core. Like a bee drawn to the nectar of a flower, Revenant was drawn to the brutality that came with the games. There was no style or pattern to his acts, he was, as he had told you previously, in love with killing. That was a simple truth, the essence of his being.
He was the assigned jumpmaster and jumped as soon as squads were allowed. He was selfish and demanded the things he wanted. He didn't share, drop items, or particularly care about you or Lifeline as a team. He was good, though, skilled. He became the kill leader before the first ring even closed, and continued to dominate the arena. You and Lifeline each had two kills, but revenant was leading with 5. You hadn't run into Crypto or his squad, at least to your knowledge, but Revenant may have very well wiped them out before you even saw. The worst part about revenant was his ultimate ability, the Death totem. When you entered it, it felt like part of you became lost, like the skin you were in was no longer yours. It was being a pushpin in a field of needles. It was horrible, and the trip back to the totem when you 'died' made you feel sick. The feeling wouldn't leave your stomach, it remained, like a growing seed of fear and disgust, of death. Lifeline once returned to the totem shortly after you and saw your face of growing discomfort.
"Makes yuh feel revolting, doesn't it?" She remarked, before dropping doc, so both of you could regain the lost health.
You only nodded, trying to keep your breakfast down.
Eventually, although you weren't paying attention, it had narrowed down to the last two squads.
The ring was small, so it was only a matter of time before you ran into the enemies, and sure enough, Revenant did, rudely saying into the mic that he had found his next targets. You hurried over, ducking behind the cover lifeline was also using, and aimed your longbow in the direction Revenant was shooting. His totem grew from the ground, and it was time to go for one of the final pushes. You hurried alongside your squad and ran past the cover the final squad was using, and aimed down your spitfire, ready to engage. You were determined and prepared to fight until you saw Crypto at the end of your barrel.
"Y/N?" He asked, lowering his weapon. He didn't recognize the shadow version of yourself, and he didn't like to see it, either.
Both your guards were lowered, and behind Crypto, you saw Revenant approaching quickly.
"Crypto!" You yelled out, but the warning came too late.
Revenants hand hardened into a deadly blade, one that entered through the back of Crypto and exited out the front, blood spilling out of his mouth and onto his jacket, his eyes widened, he collapsed, his death box appearing before you. You stood still in shock. You knew he'd be fine, the games never let any of their legends actually die on the field, and, because of your contracts, you weren't allowed to question the technology they had to have to be able to heal such fatal wounds or to be able to instantly take a fatally wounded legend from the field, but, still. You had never witnessed such gruesome killings before Revenant. Your shock led you to be shot by a bloodhound, and you were sent back to the totem, where you could no longer keep your breakfast or your screams in.
Lifeline followed, having knocked the bloodhound, only a Bangalore remained, which Revenant would have no issue killing.
"He's a monster," Lifeline said, glancing back at the dueling Bangalore and Rev.
You only nodded once more, trying to get yourself to calm down. The champion announcement rang out, your squad had won.
You didn't care to celebrate, or even stay for signings, you instead headed back to Crypto's apartment, and waited the many hours for him to return home. It took a very long time, hours passed, but you remained standing just outside the door until it creaked open, and Crypto stepped inside, perfectly fine.
You ran, and tightly wrapped your arms around him, sobbing.
You felt guilty for crying in front of him so often, but you didn't bother to care at the moment.
"Agassi. I'm fine."
"It was horrible. I feel horrible. I wanted to throw up." You ranted, your experience with revenant today left you mentally strained.
"I know," He said caringly, "But I know how to kill him, in the games. I analyzed today's game."
He moved from you to his desk, and replayed specific moments of Revenants gameplay for you, explaining he was most exposed when he returned to the totem, and that it was the best time to eliminate him.
"It will be okay, next time, I'm certain everyone will want to get rid of him as early as possible." He reassuringly explained.
You nodded, but the uneasy feeling from today didn't leave. You hoped, next time, you'd be facing him; maybe for some sort of revenge or satisfaction, you wanted to fight him next time, without fear.
You fell asleep that night in Crypto's arms, feeling a sense of security that day for the first time in a while.
For the next few days before the next match, you trained endlessly.
Crypto, without telling you, took a risk and hacked into the apex system, making sure you and he would be paired up on a squad next time, he felt the need to keep you near him.
Chapter 6: Sadistic Shadow, END.
Authors Note: Sorry this chapter is a little lackluster, and doesn't include very much about Crypto. I still have a bit of writer's block, but I really wanted to push something out for y'all this week. Next week I do plan to have some more fluffy bits with Crypto, and hopefully a longer chapter, too.
Also, how do y'all feel about the lastest mission and story pieces?
I feel so bad for crypto omg, I hate the situation he's in at the moment; and Crypto is 31!? Mirage is 30!? Looks like we into dilfs, y'all.
