The suspicion didn't start until a few days before the library incident. Y/n and Scott were driving around, trying to clear their heads and figure out a way to defeat the dread doctors. She was driving through woods in her mom's minivan, and he sat in the passenger's seat, catching her up on all the information he had so far.
And then they started talking about Theo. Stiles wasn't with them like he normally was, the three of them being the infamous trio that never seemed to separate, so Scott took that as an opportunity to tell Y/n what Theo had told him.
"Murdered him," he exclaimed, as though the word 'murder' was foreign vocabulary, "no mercy, no nothing. He murdered Donovan, Y/n."
By now she was heading towards his house to drop him off, and her mind was so, incredibly, all over the place, she nearly missed the turn. Then, when she parked her minivan outside his house, she turned to him, with concern written in her eyes.
"And you believe Theo?"
Maybe it was all the chimera chaos, or the pressure and despair that came from not being able to save all of those failures, but when Y/n questioned Scott's faith in Theo, the same way Stiles did, it hit a small nerve.
"Well what else am I supposed to believe?" Scott fired back, his voice only increasing a small amount in volume, for he didn't want to push Y/n away, the same way he did with Stiles earlier that night. "I saw the bloody wrench, and Stiles admitted to it as well."
"Okay, but, Scott... It just doesn't add up," she responds calmly, trying to reason with Scott in a civil manner, because the last she wanted was to argue with one of her best friends. "We've known Stiles for the longest time, and murdering Donovan out of bloodlust is too far of a stretch, for his character, to be true."
"Maybe there's just still a lot to learn about him," Scott shrugged, wanting to drop the topic now the he saw what Y/n's stance was. "Look, all I know is that Stiles murdered someone, and that's enough for me, because, A, he didn't tell us, and, B, there's always a different way. There's no excuse for murder."
That was enough to tick Y/n off, so much that she obnoxiously rolled her eyes, careless to the fact that Scott could very well see her immediate response of annoyance.
"Okay, I think you should get out now," Y/n spoke harshly, in a monotone voice, which sounded much more colder than she expected, but nevertheless she was very annoyed.
"Y/n," Scott mumbled, his entire body and expression softening as he realised that she was annoyed at him, because no one gets annoyed with him, especially not Y/n.
"Just go, Scott," she responded, her voice much more louder and harsher than before. "Your mom's waiting for you, so, go," she repeats, much more softly and much more quietly than before.
He stares at her for a few seconds, before respecting his best friend's wishes, and leaving, even if it did kill him inside.

The next time they saw one another was in their school library, just an hour before the incident.
Y/n had visited Stiles the night she and Scott had a falling out, and after making it clear that she didn't believe that Theo's story was the complete truth, and that all she wanted was a fuller explanation, and for him to know that she believed him, Stiles explained to her what had happened.
And so, being the mediator she was in their three-way friendship, Y/n wanted to make things right between her best friends. So, to commence that mission, she told Scott to meet her at the library.
"Look, I know last night was pretty messy," Y/n began, as she sat down on the seat, opposite from Scott, at one of the tables in the school library. "So, I called you here, because I don't like it when we fight, and I want to make things right between us."
"In that case, there's no need for you to apologise, because I forgive you."
She laughs at this, almost instant, response far too quickly and loudly to be ignored.
"Scott, just listen, okay... You were wrong about Theo," Y/n states. "I talked to Stiles, and, from there, I realised what was going on. Don't you see it? He's been breaking up our pack person by person."
It is now Scott's turn to laugh, to which Y/n is taken back by, because it was very out of character for him to shoot her down so quickly and in such a way. Maybe it was out of slight jealousy that Y/n was taking Stiles' side, after so many years of taking his.
Now, he knew that it was stupid to act on such a thought. He knew that Y/n was her own person, that she had a right to act on her own opinions and thoughts, because, as stated before, she was her own person. However, for as long as Scott could remember, it was always her on his team. No matter what he was facing, it was always Y/n cheering him on.
So, much like the prisoners in Plato's cave, when faced with this foreign concept, such as Y/n not taking his side, his first reaction was not at all pleasant.
"Do you hear yourself, Y/n?" Scott said more calmly, instantly regretting laughing, because it was obvious that it hurted Y/n. And, even though he didn't like the terms of this arrangement, and did not agree with her, the last thing he ever wanted was to hurt the girl he loved. "I mean, let's say you're right, and he is breaking up the pack- why would he want to? What's his motive?"
"I don't know... but it makes more sense than Stiles being a murderous teenager."
"Killing Donovan wasn't necessary," Scott fired back. "Killing someone is never necessary."
"Oh, that is so easy for you to say," Y/n shouted, once realising they were the only ones in the library. "You're a true alpha, with werewolf abilities. Killing is never necessary for you, because you have powers that some people don't... You can't let what Stiles did go, but your pack is falling apart, and you remain completely oblivious."
"I'm trying to figure out how to stop the dread doctors." Scott states, growing more and more annoyed with each passing second. "I'm trying to help people. I'm trying to save Beacon Hills. I'm trying to be useful, goddammit, but that seems to be a foreign concept to you, yet again."
"Scott, don't you see it? Malia hasn't spoken to you in a week, because she wants the desert wolf dead, and is scared you won't look at her the same way, because of it. Stiles is out of the picture because you can't even consider the possibility that there is more to the story than what Theo told you. Kira is with the skinwalkers. I can't even remember the last time I saw Lydia, and Liam is about to have his soul crushed because nothing in that hospital is gonna save that girl, and we all know it."
"- Ever since Theo arrived, we've all drifted apart. And, my god... You, Stiles and I- we used to be inseparable. But, now, thanks to Theo's manipulation, you've pushed Stiles away, and now your doing the same to me."
Y/n was now ignited with fury, so she was not stopping there.
"So, I'm sorry, if you don't think that I'm being useful, just because I want my best friends to stop fighting with each other. However, Scott, you're trying to save the day, whilst forgetting that the only reason you were ever able to save anyone, is because you had a pack of people who believed in you."
"Y/n," Scott whispered sheepishly, realising that he went too far. Realising, much too late, that he did the one thing he swore he would never do.
Hurt the girl he loved.
"And I've always believed in you," Y/n said, her voice weaking and eyes on the verge of tears. "You climbed through my window at five o'clock in the morning to tell me the you were a werewolf, and I believed you. You told me that there was something fishy about Derek's disappearance, junior year, and I believed you. I always believed in you, even before you were bitten, Scott. Why don't you believe me? Why is that so hard?"
"Y/n, I-"
"No," she interrupts, not wanting to hear what he had to say, because not only what her question rhetorical, but she had heard far more than enough. "Look my shift starts soon, so go to the animal clinic when you've come to your senses."
And, with that, Y/n stands up and leaves the library, unaware that her leaving, occurred just five minutes before a certain someone walked into the library with moutain ash in his pocket.
