The final bell rang informing us that school was done for the day. I rushed outside, put my things in my locker and walked over to my car. To my surprise my friends were waiting here for me. "Did I miss something?" I asked, a bit weirded out. "We're hanging out tonight at the spot. Are you coming with us?" Maddox asked me. The spot as we call it, is an abandoned summer camp where we like to hang out.
"I'm sorry. I can't tonight." I excused myself. "Why not?" Mason asked suspiciously. "Excuse me, I didn't know you're my mother now." I said a bit rudely. Mason looked a bit taken aback but brushed it off.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you." he murmured. "It's fine. I just really got to go now." I said before hopping into my car. I quickly left the parking lot and drove to the girls' school.
I got out of my car and walked over to their class where Julia was tapping her foot impatiently.
"I'm so sorry Julia, I got stuck at school and-" before I could continue she held her hand up signaling me to stop rambling. "It's fine. Just try to get here on time next time." she said, giving me a small smile. I just nodded and called the girls.
"Hey girls, how was your day?" I asked the twins. "Good, we learned how to count to 30 and we colored some pictures." Nala explained to me. "Mine is a car and sissy colored a frog." Nova continued. I nodded listening to them explaining about their day. I put both of them in their car seats and drove to the store, since Elija's daycare was open until six thirty.

After picking Elija up from daycare we drove home. I got out of the car and picked the groceries and Elija up. "Nova, can you open the door? The keys are in my pocket." I asked my sister. She nodded and took out my keys. I walked inside and put the groceries down. "Girls, go up to your room and do your homework." I ordered them. I walked inside the kitchen to see my mother glaring at me.
"Hi, mom." I said carefully. "Cut the bullshit! Where were you?" she asked, getting up. "I went to the grocery store, since we ran out of food." I answered quietly.
"LIAR!" she screamed. Before I could say something I felt a sharp pain on my cheek. She slapped me, I swallowed trying to shield Elija from her. "You're the biggest mistake I've ever made." she said coldly. She spit in my face before leaving upstairs.
My mom wasn't always like this, before my dad died she was a lovely woman, the look in her eyes when she watched us was as if we were her oxygin. That all changed the day my dad died. Sometimes she would blame me for my dad's accident, she would threaten to kill me, or hurt me. But the worst of all was that she didn't even realize what she was doing. One day when she was at her best, she asked me where I got the bruises from and begged me to tell her who hurt me. I didn't have the heart to tell her she was the one who did all of it.
I had to teach the girls to lock their room when I wasn't with them, because I was so scared she would hurt them. My siblings were my number one priority and would always be.
I decided to ignore the stinging pain on my cheek and made some dinner. When I was finished, I went upstairs to give the girls their food. I never let them eat downstairs, too scared my mother would walk in and hurt them. I took my key and opened their door, with food in my hands and Elija in a baby carrier on my stomach.
"Hey girls, dinner's ready." I smiled at them. They got up and helped me put everything down. "Are you guys finished with your homework?" I asked them.
"Yeah, can we watch a movie tonight?" Nala asked while eating her soup. "Sure sweetie. I'll get my computer when we're done okay?" I said as I fed Elija some soup. Once the girls were done with their food I got my computer and helped them pick a movie.
"I'll put Elija here while I go wash the dishes, call me if anything's wrong okay?" I asked, while putting my baby brother down. They both nodded as they helped Elija get comfortable.
I closed their room and locked it before walking downstairs with the dishes.
My mother was sitting at the counter with an emotionless expression. "I made soup." I said, putting a bowl of soup in front of her. I walked over to the sink and got started on the dishes. About a minute later I heard my mom's quiet footsteps coming closer and just as I turned around she poured the hot liquid all over me. "WHAT THE FUCK!!" I yelled.
I looked at my mom's emotionless face as she left the kitchen. The hot soup was burning through my shirt. I quickly took it off and wet a cloth, putting it on me. A few tears ran down my cheeks as I tried to stop the burns from forming but it was too late. I cleaned the floor and got upstairs to do my homework. I wrapped my upper body in some bandage after putting some ointment on the burns.
Guess I should have seen that one coming.
