Miles and Star began their search for Waylon by heading deeper into the asylum. They made their way to the Security Controls down the hall passed the main desk. Star still had her key card that allowed her access to certain areas of the building and used it to unlock the control room doors. Once they unlocked all the doors in the asylum, they could find Waylon faster and leave this hell hole before they are hurt anymore. It was a surprise to see that electricity was still running through this place but this was not the time to question miracles.
"How long have you been here?" Miles and Star took the walls keeping out of sight of any variant. Miles held his camera up at her capturing her face when they spoke. He focused on her red tinted lips and cautious eyes.
"I was supposed to be here for a week but on my last night the outbreak occurred." Star stopped short of the hallway looking down. The main hall lights were glowing and no sounds of any patients or doctors.
"So why did you come here?" Star asked him careful to avoid the three Variants watching the television screen.
"Someone sent me an anonymous email about the abuse and criminal activity going to down here. I guess I made it just in time." He put a hand over Star's torso to block a single Variant chained to a wheelchair. They bend down to the floor careful to not disturb the poor man. He sat alone with his head hung quietly crying to himself. As they walked further away, they stood up and resumed their mission. Star could hear his sobs grow softer.
"We should help him. At least untie him."
Miles stopped in his tracks at the sound of her voice. It was so weird. Even in the pits of hell she wanted to stop and save someone else life.
"Why? He could be dangerous."
"Or in pain. Better than walking around into a room with three of those guys." Star nodded to the room where three men were starring at a TV that was holding a special viewing of black and white static.
"It will only take a minute." She began to turn around only to see him shout and scream reaching for something in the darkness. The scream terrified Star and she ran back into Miles arms. Her head buried in his chest as he dragged her around the next corner. They settled down hiding behind a desk holding each other's hand.
"You okay? Are you hurt?" He asked rubbing circles around her wrist. She nodded her head careful to not hit her head. His own heart raced but not from fear. He placed her head back down to his chest letting her rest. He could smell her rose scented shampoo.
Once they had taken a short rest, they race-walked toward the Security doors and Star slide her key in allowing access inside. Miles stood behind her using his body as a shield in-case anything jumped on them. But if he was being completely honest, he just really wanted to be closer to her again.
Star headed straight to the chair and control panel looking for control sequence when Miles tapped her shoulder.
"Look." Miles pointed down to Farther Martin in the basement with the power generator.
"Oh God please don't" Star and Miles watched as the priest looks into the security camera pulling the off switch to the whole building. The sound of the lights and air condition turning down echoed in their ears. The pair was transformed into total darkness.
"What happened?" Miles switched to the night vision on his camera looking down at the doctor. They could hear a scream and rattling in the distance.
"Farther Martin shut down all the power in whole building. The generator is down in the basement of the Administration Block. I can get down there and turn it back on." She began to sat up pulling her hair up and leave but Miles grabbed her arm before she could exit.
"Alone! No way I'm coming with you!" He moved forward turning the night vision down and looking at her with his own two eyes.
"I know the layout of the building and the fastest way to get down there. Waylon would be looking for that same way. I'll find him and bring him up here and we will get out of here together." She removed her bag and set out a few small bottles of water and bandages. She set them down at his feet but gave him a flashlight.
"I thought we agree to stay together. Not splitting up for any reason." His voice grew louder which set Star on high alert for anyone listening for them.
"Shh! We agreed to leave together but I'm not leaving without Waylon." The determination set in her voice and body. Her body formed into a tense pillar of stone.
Miles stood straighter with anger and hurt in his face. "What's so special about this guy anyway? Is he really your friend?" Or something more, he thought to himself. They met less than an hour ago but he didn't want to leave her so soon. He had no idea if any of the crazies could hurt her or worse kill her.
Star stood shock with her own hurt feelings.
"He IS only my friend. He has two kids he has to get home to and I plan on doing just that. I'm not going to let two little boys grow up without a father." She readjusted the strap on her bag and walked out the door. She left Miles with his mouth open and his heart crushed. Of course he makes himself out to be an ass before the first date. Although now, he might never get that date or see her again. He collected the supplies and set them in respective pockets in his jacket and pants. After patting himself down, he took one step towards the door not before hearing those two dangerous words.
"Little pig."
Star ran down hallway after hallway feeling hurt and scared. Hurt that she would allow herself to be so openhearted and scared that Waylon could be hurt or worse. She didn't want to think about the worse part. She ran down the stairs careful to not shine her own light in any direction. She focused her eyes downward racing to reach the generator. She racked her brain looking for any clue as to why Martin would cut off all power. The generators could allow the kitchens and bathrooms to continue to work until help could be sent in for a rescue operation.
She never spoke or read anything about Martin Archimbaud only that he had a psychotic break when the art therapy was cut from the budget. He must have found religion instead because he was soon being called Father Martin by most of the patients. The doctor stepped out of her thoughts once she reached the stairs leading down into the basement. She stood off to the side looking for any signs of life. She took a stray piece of wood throwing it down listening for something to follow it. The large machines were deadly quiet with the whisper noise of water dripping down the pipes. Star reached behind her back pulling out the hunting knife from her pocket. Hopefully, she won't have to use it.
She slide her on her feet keeping her footsteps as small as possible. The lever for the generator was only ten feet away from her just around a chain-linked wall. She placed the flashlight in between her teeth with the knife in her right hand and pushed the lever up to turn the power back on. The machine woke up with a groan and hiss as they started to work up again. The lights flickered on and loud noise caused her to jump covering her ears unconsciously. She shut her own light off and set her knife away. She turned around to face a towering shadow right behind her. It stood over the frighten female as it watched her drop her flashlight and open her mouth in fright. As the black tube fell to the ground with a clatter it disappeared into the floor where the flash light rolled leaving no trace behind it.
Her heart-rate slowed down enough for her to pick back up her light and run out of the basement. She made her way to the stair case leading to her exit but a pair of feet stopped her as soon as she touched the handrail.
"Hey buddy."
"Dr. Trager?"
He had changed.
From the greasy lines of hair to the rags of a gown around his waist; he was different. His face covered by the ragged surgical mask and a device of wires around his arm.
He moved forward leading her to walk backwards into the thin medal wall. As her bag touch the wall a sharp thin medal was pushed into her skin. Her voice cracked as she tried to cry for help. Her body began to feel limp and her knees buckled underneath her. Her vision became spotty with darkness forming around the edges of her eyes.
"Oh how I've missed you honey. We're going to be great together." His face loomed over body as she lost her last conscious thoughts.
