The Dance

The Valentine's Day Dance was today. My mom drove me there, dropping me off in front of the school. I walked out of the car with my purse. I spotted my friend Zara and immediately walked to her.

"Hey, Anna! You look fabulous!" Zara complimented me.

"Thanks! You do too!" I hugged her. She was wearing a sparkly tee and a red jean jacket. Her pants stripped with pink, making her look super adorable.

"Hey, um, if you see Marco and Marisa dancing together, don't worry about it. He doesn't deserve you," Zara whispered. I nodded but I had a sinking feeling in my stomach.

We entered the school gym together but once Zara saw her date, I was on my own. I saw Ben alone, near the food table, but decided against talking to him. But, I guess Ben felt differently cause he walked right over.

"Hi, Anna," he said.

"Hi, Ben. Who are you here with?" I asked, just to talk about something.

Ben shook his head. "No one."

"Oh." There was an awkward silence between us. Just a week ago, we were best friends, talking about everything. Now, we had nothing to talk about.

"Wanna dance?"

I gasped. "Sure."

He led me onto the dance floor, and we swayed back and forth, to the music.

"I forgive you," he said, suddenly.

"What?" I breathed.

Ben bit his lip, "You just moved here. You didn't know how things were here, right?"

"Yes," I quietly admitted.

"Okay. Well, I get it. Marco was there first for you. I can't beat that but Anna, I will always be there for you. Through thick and thin." Aww...this was so sweet! Ben is so kind-hearted and genial, I thought to myself.

"Thank you, Ben. I'm here for you too," I leaned my head on his chest and he gave me a hug. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Marco and Marisa arguing. I excused myself from Ben and walked over.

"Go get him," Ben had whispered to me and I knew he was talking about Marco.

"Hey, what's going on?" I wanted to know.

Marco shook his head. "Nothing."

Marisa rolled her eyes and walked away. That left Marco and I, standing inches away from each other.

"I'm sorry!" Marco and I both said at the same time. We stared at each other and started laughing.

"Marco, you're the nicest friend I could ask for. When we were friends, cause it doesn't seem like we're friends right now."

"We are. We never weren't friends, Anna. I...I love you too much," Marco admitted.

I gaped. Did Marco just say he loved me? He did! "I love you too, Marco." We hugged and he led me outside, away from everyone else.

I looked around. "What are we do..." I didn't have time to ask because his lips already met mine. His lips were so soft and all too quickly, he pulled away. I dared to look at him, and he was smiling.

"Come on, let's dance," Marco grabbed me inside and swung me around. I may not have come here with him, but he was mine, today, and forever. I would have to fix things with Marisa, but from the look on her face right now, we were already friends again. Dreamers, like Marisa had said, we were all dreamers. And my dream had come true.
