CHAPTER 3

Lauren has become restless and anxious since after the interview at Ashton's company. It's been two weeks and she's not heard from them. She'd been so hopeful that she'd get the job as if her life depended on it. The thought of not getting a job soon made her feel queasy.

She heard a knock on her door and wondered where the visitor came from.  She opened the door and to her greatest surprise, it was Gloria.

'Are you letting me in or do you want to continue staring at me', said the talkative.

'Sorry, come in. I was just surprised to see you here.'

'How have you been? My appointment letter was sent to me yesterday, and I came to confirm if you've seen yours.'

'I didn't receive any message. In fact, I've been restless.'

'I'm sorry about that Lauren, I hope you get this job too. Are you busy now? Don't say no.'

Lauren was still thinking of what to say when she heard Gloria speak.

'Lauren, I mean no harm. I thought you also got the job and I planned for us to celebrate it together. I just felt that we should still go, it's not very far from here.'

'Alright, but we won't take long.'

'Cross my heart.'

They went to a restaurant not far away and Lauren only ordered a sausage roll and water, but Gloria asked the waiter to add some dessert. After the meal, Gloria dropped her at home. She collected her phone number and promised to call to her appointment.

Lauren waited patiently to receive an appointment letter but it was never came. She had to give up and could only sell some of her mother's belongings in order to sustain, one of the things she hated most.  She continued searching for other jobs as the money with her wouldn't last for long time. She had always felt that she's a bad luck, her only comforter was her mother.

She had always wished to live a happy life like other kids, live with both parents and maybe siblings she could play around it. Unfortunately, her fate seemed different from theirs and she had to adapt to it. She could only hope for a better future.

     Second brother! Second brother!!
'Dad wants to speak to you on the phone, she screamed before running out of the room.'

He got up from his bed and hissed before going to the bathroom to have a shower.

He came downstairs after fifteen minutes and the maids and butlers bowed politely.

'Good morning, Sir Ashton.'
He didn't even spare them a glance as he walked elegantly to the dinning area. The chief cook came to ask him what to serve him but he waved him off. They all understood and left one after the other to avoid being the scapegoat of the day.
