Erwin's POV

"Hey! Leave her alone!" I stood up fiercely. The boy turned around, clutching on the girl's collar as she shut her eyes, tears running down her face.

"Well well well, look who it is? If it isn't Mr Smith's favourite student." He said, letting go of the girl. He shoved the girl's book to his other friend. I offered my hand to him, "Kindly return her book, please." I said.

The boy scoffed at my request and snatched the book. "You want this, huh, Eyebrows?" He strolled closer to me, holding the book in one hand as he plastered a sly smirk. "It's not yours." I pleaded.

"No. I just wanna mess with that loser." The boy chuckled. I tried to get the book away from him but he backed off and pushed me down. "Whoa there, blondie! Who do you think you are? You're so desperate to save your girlfriend, huh?"

I put my weight on my elbows, filled my hand with dirt and threw it at him. It hit his eyes, he groaned and rubbed his eyes. "Okay, you asked for it." And so he picked me up by my collar and threw me at a nearby wall. He began to put up a few kicks and his friend grabbed the girl's wrist, searching her pockets as if to find something. "Yo, ty, I got a few cash, let's go!" He said. The boy who was kicking me stopped and turned to him. His friend nodded and dropped the girl, falling to her knees.

"You want your book? Here." The boy opened the book, teared up a few pages, and dropped it at my face. He laughed and they both left. I curled into a ball, taking deep breaths to soothe the ache on my stomach.

"Hey, are you okay?" I heard the girl approached me. I sat up and looked at her. "Yeah, that's Tyler for you. He's always a jerk." I rubbed my shoulder. "He hit you pretty bad."

"No, it's fine. Look," I showed her I hid a book under my vest, to shield me from the hit. She smiled and looked back into my eyes. "That's smart." She chimed, I stood up and helped her to her feet.

"Umm, I'm sorry about your book." I picked up the book and the scattered pages, bundle them up and gave it to her. She gladly took it and nodded. "It's alright. Thank you for standing up for me." She replied. I smiled at her response.

"I'm Erwin Smith." I offered her my hand. She gladly took it. "My name is (Y/n) (L/n)."

And so we became best friends since then. She just moved here so that explains why I never saw her before. We went to school together. Tyler stopped bullied her because I'm always around and he's tired of that.

I learned that (Y/n) had an older brother and he was in the Survey Corps. She was so eager to join after him. I also found out that she lived with only her mother, her father was gone before she was even born. She was sometimes jealous of me whenever I bond with my father. Not in a bad way that is, she was only saying things like "I wish I could do things with my father like you."

One day she invited me to her house. Thus I met her mother and her brother. They were nice people. Just one day, (Y/n) discovered something.

I went to (Y/n)'s house before sunset. I brought a few books for us to entertain ourselves, I loved that she's a book lover like myself. I don't know, maybe I just... Like her, like her.

When I was a few steps away from her house, I saw her coming out of her front door. I stopped my tracks when I saw her face all red and eyes all puffy, had she been crying? She didn't notice my presence. She began to run to the back of her house. I decided to follow her to see what she's up to.

I found her curling down, hugging her knees near a river. "(Y/n)?" I peered from an alley. (Y/n) released a small gasp and looked up at me. "Oh, Erwin. W-what brings you here?" She wiped her nose and eyes. "I saw you came here. Are you okay?"

(Y/n) didn't reply, she lay her chin on her knees and stared at the river. I crept up to her and sat down beside her. I waited until she opened up.

"I heard my mom and my brother arguing." She whispered. I turned to her, she kept her eyes glued to the river. She bit her lip and sobbed. "They were talking about me, about my desire to join the Scouts." She wept. I quietly listen to her, scooting closer to her to make her feel like she's not alone.

"What did you hear?" I asked. She went silent for a few seconds, "They said my father was a member of the Survey Corps. And that he died... outside the walls." She finished. I was lying if I say I wasn't surprised. "My brother tried to defend me, he supports my dream, because he will be there protecting me. But my mom dislikes the idea. She doesn't want me to join the Scouts because she was afraid that I would end up like my father. And the worst thing of all. She didn't tell me for all these years. She knew my dream is to join the Scouts, but she didn't even want me to!" She cried. She hid her face to her knees, softly crying. I placed a reassuring hand on her back, gently soothing her.

I felt bad for her. I couldn't understand what she's been through. The only thing I could is that she grew up with one parent. "I'm sorry, (Y/n)."

(Y/n) kept on crying. I wrapped my arms around her and she stopped crying for a second and hugged me back. I smiled to myself, enjoying her touch. "I can't relate to you, but I do know one thing..." I pulled away. She looked at me with her teary eyes. "You go follow your dreams. Don't let anyone mess up with your mind." I said.

"But, my mom."

"She's a mother. I'm sure she'll listen to her child. You have your brother. She can rely on him. And your father... I'm sure he will be proud of you." I ended my sentence with a smile. (Y/n)'s frown faded into a smile. She wiped her face and took a breath. "You're right. But my mom will be disappointed at me. I don't want that."

I sighed and stood up. Her mother was a tough one. I know she just wanted (Y/n) to be safe. But if she thinks having her brother by her side isn't enough, then I will take part.

"Hey, (Y/n)." She looked up at me. I reached out my hand to her and smiled.

"Let's join the Survey Corps together!"
