Jace's POV
"I'm pregnant."
Those are the only words I hear before I jump out of the chair, walk over and kiss her on the forehead, and head out the door. She tries to call me back, but I'm not listening. How could I listen to someone else when my thoughts are eating me alive?
Violently, I jab the button on the elevator that will take me to the lobby. I hit it a few more times when I hear Clary running down the hallway behind me. Before the door has a chance to open, she grabs my wrist and pulls me backward. I jerk my wrist away, and glare at her. There are tears in her eyes. I raise my hand and wipe them away as they streak a path down her cheeks. "You were just going to leave," she whispers.
"Clary, you need to know that I love you, and I love the idea of raising a child with you, but I'm just not ready." The previous anger I had is dwindling, now I'm just upset with myself. If Clary hadn't stopped me, would I have just left?
"We can do it together. Me and you, you and me. We can be a family." Her tears stopped, But her eyes are still glistening.
"You know how my childhood was when I was little," I turn away from her and look at the floor. "I don't want to mess up and be a bad father like how I was raised." I can't look at her. I just can't. I turn around and walk into the elevator. I spin a little, and before the doors shut I see her turn and run down the hallway away from me. When I reach the lobby, I walk out the doors faster than I ever have in my entire life.
Clary's POV
I can barely breathe between the sobs racking my body and the lack of air from running aimlessly through the Institute halls. How could Jace, the Jace I know, just leave like that? All the thoughts that are running through my head are making me dizzy. I trip, and fall into somebody. "S-sorry," I choke out.
"Clarissa? Are you alright?" It was Magnus. The glittery vest he had on was scratching my face, so I move away. I wipe my eyes, and nod, trying to slow my breathing. "Clearly, you are not. What's wrong, muffin?"
I shake my head, both at his question and the silly nickname he has for me. "I really don't think you are the person I should talk about this with." I say.
"Okay, would you like me to get Jace for you? I'm sure he would be willing to talk with you."
I burst out in tears again, and fall against the wall. "J-just go." I ask, covering my face with my hands. When he doesn't move, I shout at him, "GO!" He hesitantly walks away, and I eventually pass out from the force of my crying.
XXX
I wake up in my bed at Luke's farm house. Jocelyn is there at my feet, picking at the design on my blanket. She must hear me wake up, because she is at my side in a heartbeat. "Clary, baby, drink something." She hands me a warm glass, which I take with no objections. It tastes sweet, like peppermint. "There, better?"
I sigh. I feel like nothing in the world could make me feel any better. But I force a smile on my face anyway. "Yeah, thanks mom."
Then something bizarre happens. Jocelyn's smile morphs so that it is all teeth, and the skin on her face sags and turns a pale shade of blue. Her red hair falls to the floor, and in it's place is a bunch of dripping slime. Her arms and legs recede into her body, until she is just a blob of blue goo. All of her clothes are ripped and lying on the floor. I scream, and back up into the head board of the bed. I search my pockets for a spare seraph blade, but there are none. Not even on the dresser.
I jump up right before the demon who used to be my mother spits red poison from its mouth into the spot I was just sitting in. Frantic, I rush to the window, trying to force it open. Not even a budge. It must be locked from the outside. With the demon standing in front of the door, I am trapped.
I grab the nearest object to me, a lamp, and throw it at the demon. It hits it in the side, and is absorbed into the goo. I scream again. The demon is getting closer, and there is nothing left to do. I back up into the window, and stand, awaiting my inevitable death.
I flinch as I feel a hand on my shoulder, pulling me backwards. In a flash, somebody has pulled me through the window to safety on the roof. The window slams shut with a bang as more red poison hits the glass. I turn around to see who just saved my life, and freeze. Standing all around me are faerie knights, and before I have a chance to move, one of them hits me in the head with something. I sway, and the whole world goes dark.
