We sit and talk for a while before Nick wakes up again. He fell asleep after we got back, and now he's wide awake. But he still isn't talking.
"When can we go home?" Harry asks.
"Oh. Of course you'd want to see your parents and families again. Yes, you can all go home. I will see you soon enough."
"You will?" Henry asks. "What do you mean?"
"I mean just that," Cassie says. "Priscilla and I go to your school. I am graduating this year, but I will be seeing you in class."
"Oh okay," I say. "It was nice meeting you two, thanks for everything."
She nods, and portals us back home.
......
For two weeks, nothing eventful happens. Today's the last day of school, and Tori's birthday, so we are having a party as soon as school lets out at a local park, just the eight of us.
I am standing in the hall, emptying out my locker, when Nick comes over. We have not spoken about that night he was tortured, it's like an unspoken agreement between us. But shockingly, he brings it up.
"I'm sorry about that. About ... the bloodlust stuff."
"It's fine," I reply.
"No, it's really not," he says. "I'm so, so sorry about that. I feel like I was betraying you.... I never want to do that again. I swear. And when they were beating me up, all I could think about was how I wanted to say that to you, and prove that I do love you."
My heart stops. Did he just say ... ?
"You ... you love me?" I ask.
"Well, yeah, of course I do," he says, rubbing his neck. "Do you feel that way too?"
"Oh, Nick, you know I do," I say softly.
He smiles and hugs me tight. Then he steps back and grins like I've never seen him smile before, his eyes alight.
"Come on," he says. "You ready to go to the park?"
